Los Pinos – Cabañas & Jardines

Los Pinos - Cabañas & Jardines - Rates and Information

During my three days in Monteverde, Costa Rica, I stayed at the fabulous Los Pinos Cabañas & Jardines hotel. Los Pinos is a family-run hotel that has been featured in National Geographic. The hotel is located high in the rainforests of Monteverde, and it is common to see wildlife from the guest rooms. During my stay, I saw monkeys and an assortment of birds every morning while eating breakfast on my porch.

When I looked into booking this hotel, I thought a room would easily go for over $100 a night. I was shocked to be able to secure my room for $77 a night. Each room at Los Pinos Cabañas & Jardines is a separate cabin and is far enough away from each other to feel like you are secluded in the rainforest.

Los Pinos is not only a hotel but also has a functioning greenhouse, as well as multiple trails that go through the rainforest. Unfortunately, during my visit, the weather did not cooperate, and I was unable to walk the trails throughout the property.

When I arrived at Los Pinos, I was greeted by Rafael who is a member of the Los Pinos founding family. Rafael checked me in and then drove me to my cabin in a golf cart.

My Cabaña at Los Pinos - Cabañas & Jardines

The Cabañas (cabins) at Los Pinos Cabañas & Jardines are fantastic. My cabin featured a full-size bed, comfortable lounge chair, kitchenette with a refrigerator and stove, dining table, comfortable couch, and WiFi. The cabin was not air-conditioned as the temperatures in Monteverde fall into the 50s in the evening. It was fairly hot during the day, but I typically did not spend much of that time in my room. I found that I did not miss the air conditioning as much as I thought I would. The biggest problem was the humidity, and that without the dehumidifying feature of the air conditioner that my wet clothes did not dry..

The bed was fairly comfortable, especially compared to other cabins I have stayed in. I found that I did not need the blankets due to the temperature and simply slept under a sheet

The hotel does not provide breakfast because each cabin has a fully functioning kitchen. My kitchen included two propane burners, a microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, refrigerator, rice cooker, and an assortment of pots and pans. The kitchen also was equipped with plates, bowls, glasses, silverware, and a few other key items such as salt, pepper, and olive oil.

I had one scary moment in the kitchen that occurred when I was doing the dishes after cooking breakfast. As I went to clean a bowl that was face down in the sink, I noticed a large scorpion under it. Had I been thinking, I would have taken a photo, but instead, I quickly smashed it with a cooking spoon. Seeing the scorpion made me a little uneasy, and I shook out my bedding and clothes multiple times to make sure there weren’t any other scorpions in them.

I did not spend a lot of time at the table or on the couch. Instead, I chose to relax and eat my meals on my porch, which will be featured in the next section.

My Porch at Los Pinos - Cabañas & Jardines

My favorite part of my stay at Los Pinos Cabañas & Jardines was lounging on the porch. My porch had a picnic table, couch, and hammock, all under a waterproof roof. Each morning I ate breakfast on the porch, and a group of Capuchin Monkeys would drop out of the trees looking for food. Of course, I did not feed the monkeys as it is not recommended to give them human food.

Meals

There is no restaurant and no meals provided at Los Pinos Cabañas & Jardines because each cabin has a kitchen. I walked down the street to the MegaSuper grocery store and bought eggs, bacon, potatoes, and sausage. These items allowed me to cook multiple breakfasts and one dinner. My one regret is that I didn’t check out the property’s greenhouse and buy some organic fruits and vegetables.

I also ate twice at Restaurante Don Luis. This restaurant is located about a quarter of a mile northwest of Los Pinos. I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken soup and the steak with vegetables. With the constant rain, it was nice to have a delicious restaurant within walking distance of my cabin.
