Who I Am and Why I Travel
Hello, I’m Buzz, and welcome to Buzzin Around the World.
I’m a solo traveler who began traveling internationally in 2015. Since being bitten by the travel bug—or in this case, a travel bee—I’ve visited 51 countries, with a long-term goal of seeing as many of the world’s countries as possible.
Originally, my goal was to reach 50 countries by the time I turned 50. From there, I plan to continue adding at least one new country each year, as long as I’m able. If all goes well, maybe I’ll reach 100 countries by the time I’m 100 years old.
I created this blog in June 2018 to share my real-world experiences as a solo traveler and to document what independent travel actually looks like. This site focuses on walking tours, viewpoints, observation decks, transportation experiences, and practical travel guides—often centered on exploring places on foot and experiencing destinations firsthand.

Travel, Teaching, and Real-World Experience
When I’m not traveling, I work as an 8th Grade World Geography teacher in Central Minnesota. One of my favorite parts of travel is gaining firsthand cultural experiences that allow me to teach the world beyond a textbook. Walking through cities, navigating public transit systems, and observing daily life abroad gives me perspective I can bring directly into my classroom.
How Travel Became Part of My Life
My love of travel started early. My parents—both teachers—took our family on road trips every summer. Because we didn’t have much money, those trips often meant long drives instead of flights. Some of my favorite childhood destinations included Niagara Falls, Dillon, Colorado, Panama City Beach, Bryce Canyon, Mount Rushmore, and our family cabin in Northern Michigan..
By 2015, I had visited 44 of the 50 U.S. states, but I had never traveled internationally beyond short trips into Canada and a brief border crossing into Mexico. My first international trips took me to Vancouver, Victoria, and Montreal—experiences that gave me the confidence to continue traveling internationally on my own. Over time, that confidence grew into trips across Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, many of which are now documented throughout this site
When Travel Doesn’t Go as Planned
Not every trip has gone perfectly.
During a high-elevation tour of the Lagunas in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the wheels of our tour van fell off while driving up a dirt road in the Andes Mountains. The vehicle had reportedly been serviced the day before, but the lug nuts hadn’t been properly tightened. Thanks to the quick reaction of our driver, we avoided going over the edge of the mountainside.
I’ve also experienced the impact of terrorism while traveling. In March 2016, I was traveling through Europe when the Brussels Airport attack occurred, placing airports across the continent on high alert. A year later, in August 2017, I had walked down La Rambla in Barcelona the night before a vehicle attack occurred there. At the time of the attack, I was traveling to Andorra without cell service, leaving family and friends unable to reach me until later that day.
These experiences—both positive and difficult—have shaped how I travel and what I choose to share on this site.
