Best Tours Around the World I’ve Personally Taken

I have taken guided tours, day trips, boat rides, safaris, scenic flights, and cultural tours all over the world. This page brings together some of the best tours around the world that I have personally experienced during my travels.

These are not sponsored rankings or generic bucket-list ideas. Every tour or travel experience on this page is something I actually did myself. Some were organized guided tours, some were day trips, and a few were independent experiences that worked like tours because they helped me see a destination in a more structured way.

I grouped these world travel experiences by the type of trip instead of by continent. That makes it easier to compare ancient ruins, waterfalls, safaris, desert landscapes, winter tours, city tours, and cultural experiences.

Affiliate Disclosure: Below each of the tours featured on this page, I’ve provided affiliate booking links through Viator. If you book through these links, I will receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. Please note that Viator partners with various tour companies, and the linked tour packages may differ slightly from my personal experience.

How I Chose These Tours

I chose these tours based on how memorable they were, how much they helped me understand a destination, and whether they made travel logistics easier. A few of them were not perfect, and I mention that when it matters. Some tours had excellent guides, while others were worth doing mainly because the destination itself was so strong.

For me, the best tours are not always the most expensive or polished. They are the ones that help me see something I could not easily experience on my own, whether that is a remote national park, a complicated border crossing, a historic site with important context, or a wildlife experience that requires local knowledge.

Ancient Ruins, Religious Sites, and Historic Tours

Petra, Jordan

Walking Through the Siq - Petra, Jordan
Walking Through the Siq
The Treasury - Petra, Jordan
The Treasury Building

Best For: Ancient ruins, history, and long day trips

My one-day visit to Petra from Jerusalem was one of the longest but most memorable tours I have taken. After a pre-dawn departure, a border crossing into Jordan, and a long ride to Petra, I had about four hours to explore the ancient city. During that time, I walked through the Siq, saw the Treasury, continued along the Street of Facades, and made it as far as the Petra Theater.

Why It Stands Out: Petra is one of the most unforgettable ancient sites I have visited, even on a rushed one-day tour.

Masada, Israel

Best For: Desert scenery, ancient history, and Dead Sea day trips

Reaching Masada from Tel Aviv was much easier with a tour because transportation, timing, tickets, and the cable car were handled for me. I visited with Bein Harim Tours, stopped at the Below Sea Level Marker on the way, and rode the Masada Cable Car to the top because the temperature was over 100°F and the tour had limited time. Once on the plateau, I explored the fortress ruins while learning about Herod the Great, the First Jewish-Roman War, the Roman siege, and Masada’s importance in Jewish history.

Why It Stands Out: Masada combines desert views, ancient ruins, and a dramatic historical setting in one manageable day trip.

The Dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Tomb of Jesus Christ

Best For: Religious history, Old City walking tours, and guided context

A guided tour helped make Jerusalem’s holy sites much easier to understand in a single day. I went with Bein Harim Tours, and the day included the Mount Scopus Viewpoint, Jaffa Gate, Tower of David, the Jewish Quarter, the Western Wall, the Muslim Quarter, several Stations of the Cross, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The Old City can be crowded and confusing, so having a guide helped me understand what I was seeing instead of just moving from one famous site to another.

Why It Stands Out: This tour connected major Jewish, Christian, and Islamic holy sites into one organized day.

The Pillared Chamber in the Tomb of Rameses V and VI - Valley of the Kings

Best For: Ancient temples, tombs, and ambitious day trips

Taking a day trip to Luxor from Cairo was one of the most ambitious travel days I have planned because it required flying between the two cities and touring both banks of the Nile in one day. I booked with Emo Tours Egypt, and the package included round-trip flights, a private guide, a driver, and visits to the Colossi of Memnon, Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s Temple, Karnak Temple, and Luxor Temple. The Valley of the Kings was the biggest highlight for me, especially because I was able to visit multiple tombs and see the artwork inside.

Why It Stands Out: This tour made it possible to see several of Luxor’s most important ancient sites in one long day from Cairo.

Step Pyramid of Djoser

Best For: Pyramid sites, archaeology, and Cairo day trips

Giza was crowded and touristy, but seeing the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx in person was still unforgettable. Having a guide helped at such a busy, spread-out site, especially with timing, viewpoints, and navigating the constant activity around the pyramids. I also visited Saqqara and Dahshur, which gave me a quieter look at Egyptian pyramids and helped show how pyramid construction developed over time.

Why It Stands Out: Combining Giza with Saqqara and Dahshur gives a much better pyramid-focused day than only visiting the most famous site.

Chichén Itzá, Mexico

Best For: Maya ruins, archaeology, and long day trips from Cancún

Chichén Itzá was worth the long day from Cancún, mostly because the guide added so much context to the ruins. I went with Amigo Tours, and the day included transportation from Cancún, a stop in Valladolid, around three hours at Chichén Itzá, lunch, and a cenote stop on the way back. The biggest reason this tour stood out was the guiding, especially once I joined Rodrigo’s group inside the ruins and learned about the Temple of Kukulkan, the Temple of Warriors, the Great Ball Court, and Maya culture.

Why It Stands Out: A strong guide turned Chichén Itzá from a famous landmark into a much more meaningful archaeological visit.

Palenque, Mexico

Best For: Maya ruins, jungle scenery, and guided historical context

The ruins of Palenque felt especially memorable because they were surrounded by jungle and explained by one of the better guides I had in Mexico. I booked with Jungla Experience, and Ramon Rodriguez helped turn the ruins from a scenic site into a much more meaningful story about Maya rulers, religion, politics, engineering, and daily life. The tour included major parts of the ancient city, including the Temple of the Skull, Tomb of the Red Queen, Temple of the Inscriptions, the Palace, the Group of the Cross, the Ball Court, and the aqueduct.

Why It Stands Out: Palenque combined detailed guiding, jungle surroundings, and some of the most interesting Maya ruins I visited in Mexico.

Book a Similar Tour:

Tulum, Mexico

Best For: Maya ruins, coastal scenery, short tours, and Cancún-area side trips

Tulum was not the most detailed Maya site I visited, but the setting above the Caribbean Sea made it completely different from Chichén Itzá and Palenque. I booked with SAT Mexico, and the tour gave me about two hours inside the archaeological site, which was enough to see the city walls, residences, Temple of the Frescoes, El Castillo, coastal viewpoints, iguanas, and the beach below the ruins. This worked well as a shorter guided visit because I had limited time in the Cancún area.

Why It Stands Out: Tulum is not the most in-depth Maya site I visited, but the coastal setting makes it memorable.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Best For: Inca ruins, guided history, and bucket-list travel experiences

Few historic sites I have visited felt as memorable as Machu Picchu. After reaching Aguas Calientes, I met my guide and group, took the bus up to the entrance, and began with the classic viewpoint while waiting for the clouds to clear. From there, we walked through the Inca ruins and saw the Main Temple, Room of the Three Windows, Intihuatana Stone, Temple of the Sun, Sacred Rock, farming terraces, and views of Huayna Picchu.

Why It Stands Out: Machu Picchu is much more meaningful with a guide who can explain the stonework, religious spaces, terraces, and history behind the site.

The Great Buddha Statue was a Highlight of My Day Trip to Bodh Gaya
Great Buddha Statue

Best For: Buddhist holy sites, world religions, and long private day trips

A Bodh Gaya day trip from Varanasi is not a casual side trip, but it was worth the long day because I specifically wanted to visit one of Buddhism’s most important holy sites. The day included a very early departure, about five hours of driving each way, and visits to the Mahabodhi Temple Complex, Mucalinda Sarovar, the Bodhi Tree, the Great Buddha Statue, and the Sleeping Buddha Statue. The Mahabodhi Temple was the clear highlight because Bodh Gaya is traditionally recognized as the place where Buddha reached enlightenment.

Why It Stands Out: This is a rewarding journey for travelers with a real interest in Buddhist history, world religions, or the life of Buddha.

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey

Best For: Layovers, religious history, and short guided tours

The Hagia Sophia was the one Istanbul site I most wanted to see during my overnight layover between Marrakech and Nairobi. Since I only had time for one major stop, I booked a 1:00 PM guided tour instead of trying to rush through several attractions. The guide helped explain the Hagia Sophia’s history as a church, mosque, museum, and mosque again, along with the mix of Christian mosaics, Islamic calligraphy, geometric design, and active prayer space inside.

Since Hagia Sophia visitor rules have changed since my visit, I recommend checking the current tourist entrance, ticket, and prayer-time rules before planning a layover visit.

Why It Stands Out: This tour turned a layover into a meaningful cultural stop without trying to see all of Istanbul in a rushed day.

Best For: Desert scenery, camel trekking, and multi-day overland travel

The 3-day Sahara Desert tour from Marrakech was one of my favorite travel experiences because the journey felt like part of the adventure. The route included Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Dades Gorge, a Berber village visit, Merzouga, a sunset camel ride, a night at a Berber camp, and a sunrise ride back through the dunes of Erg Chebbi. The camel riding was not especially comfortable, but watching the sand change color at sunset and waking up in the Sahara made the long journey worth it.

Why It Stands Out: The long drive is part of the experience, but reaching the dunes of Erg Chebbi made the trip worth it.

El Chichón / Chichonal Volcano, Mexico

Best For: Volcano hiking, adventure travel, and challenging guided tours

Hiking El Chichón / Chichonal Volcano in Chiapas was one of the most physically difficult tours I have taken. I went with Jungla Experience and guide Ramon Rodriguez, which was the right choice because the volcano is remote, the roads to basecamp are rough, and the hike itself requires real effort. The route included a long approach, a steep climb to the ridge, and a technical descent into the crater, where the volcanic landscape felt completely different from anywhere else I had been.

Why It Stands Out: This was a challenging, memorable, and far more adventurous experience than a typical sightseeing day.

Lagunas Altiplánicas and Piedras Rojas, Chile

Best For: Desert landscapes, high-altitude lakes, and Atacama scenery

The scenery on my Atacama Desert tour to Lagunas Altiplánicas and Piedras Rojas was outstanding, but the tour itself came with a serious safety issue. The landscapes around Piedras Rojas, the frozen salt lake, Lake Miscanti, and the high-altitude desert were incredible, and I also saw guanacos along the route. Unfortunately, the van’s wheel came loose during the drive, which delayed the tour and kept us from reaching Lake Miñiques.

Why It Stands Out: The scenery was outstanding, but I would choose a different company than the one I used.

Best For: Desert landscapes, national parks, and remote day trips

Altyn-Emel National Park was one of the most unusual landscape tours I took in Kazakhstan. I went with Kazakhstan, Very Nice!, and the long day included the colorful Aktau Mountains, the volcanic-looking Katutau Mountains, lunch at a guesthouse in Basshi Village, and the Singing Dune. The Aktau Mountains were beautiful but hotter and more physically demanding than I expected, while the Singing Dune was the clear highlight because I had never experienced anything like hearing and feeling the sand vibrate.

Why It Stands Out: The Singing Dune made this one of the most unusual natural experiences I have had anywhere.

Best For: Outback scenery, short walks, and guided day tours from Alice Springs

The West MacDonnell Ranges tour from Alice Springs worked especially well because it gave me outback scenery without needing to rent a car. I went with Emu Run Experience, and the day included short walks, meals, and several major stops in the ranges. The biggest reason this tour stood out was my guide, Bluey, who shared stories, history, and context throughout the day.

Why It Stands Out: A great guide made the scenery more meaningful and helped turn the day into more than just a series of photo stops.

Best For: Outback travel, sacred landscapes, and long day trips

A tour was the easiest way for me to visit Uluṟu and Kata Tjuṯa from Alice Springs without managing a very long Red Centre drive on my own. I went with Emu Run Experience, and the day included Mount Conner Lookout, the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa Cultural Centre, Muṯitjulu Waterhole, the Mala Walk, Walpa Gorge, and a barbecue dinner while watching the sunset colors on Uluṟu. The long drive would have been a lot to manage independently, so having transportation, meals, national park logistics, and commentary handled by the tour made the day much easier.

Why It Stands Out: The tour made a very long Red Centre day possible without renting a car or planning every stop myself.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Best For: Waterfalls, lakes, winter scenery, and independent day trips

Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park from Zagreb in winter was not a guided tour, but it still belongs on this page because it was one of the best organized day trips I took in Europe. I visited in winter, when Entrance #1 was the only entrance selling tickets during my visit, and used roundtrip bus transportation from Zagreb instead of renting a car. Heavy snow made visibility difficult at first, so I took the Big Lake ferry and then worked backward through the Lower Lakes once the weather cleared.

Why It Stands Out: The snowy scenery, turquoise water, boardwalk paths, and quiet winter atmosphere made this one of my favorite national park visits.

Best For: Waterfalls, seasonal scenery, and classic Iceland day tours

Seeing Iceland’s South Coast waterfalls in both summer and winter showed me how different the same route can feel depending on the season. Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss had green landscapes, easier paths, and the chance to walk behind Seljalandsfoss in summer, compared with snow, ice, fewer crowds, and more limited access in winter. Skógafoss was impressive in both seasons, while Seljalandsfoss felt especially different because the winter path behind the waterfall was closed.

Why It Stands Out: This route is a classic Iceland sightseeing day, especially when paired with a glacier hike, Katla Ice Cave, or another South Coast stop.

I booked a tour with Green Vacations that included Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges, La Fortuna Waterfall, Arenal Volcano National Park, entrance fees, and a traditional Costa Rican lunch. The day included rainforest walking, hanging bridges, swimming near the waterfall, and hiking across old lava fields near Arenal Volcano.

Why It Stands Out: This tour made it possible to see the main sights of La Fortuna in one organized day.

The Brazilian side of Iguaçu Falls was much easier to visit with a tour because I was coming from Puerto Iguazú, Argentina. The tour helped with transportation, the Argentina-Brazil border crossing, park entry, and timing. The Brazilian side felt more streamlined than the Argentina side, but the panoramic views were incredible, especially near Devil’s Throat.

Why It Stands Out: The Brazilian side gives the big-picture view of Iguaçu Falls, and the border logistics were much easier with a tour.

The day included Lorne Beach, the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch, Kennet River Koala Walk, Apollo Bay, Great Otway National Park, the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, and dinner in Colac. The biggest highlight was seeing the Twelve Apostles, especially because I added the optional helicopter ride and got to view the coastline from the air.

Why It Stands Out: This tour included wildlife, rainforest, beaches, cliffs, and coastal viewpoints instead of feeling like one long drive with only a single major stop.

The highlights were hiking through Charyn Canyon, seeing the mountain scenery around Kolsay Lake, and reaching Kaindy Lake with its sunken spruce trees.

Why It Stands Out: The landscapes were incredible, but I would go in expecting a very long day, rough roads, crowds, heat, and some disorganization.

The pilot circled the Great Blue Hole multiple times in both directions, so both sides of the plane had clear views of the deep blue circle surrounded by turquoise reef.

Best For: Wildlife, safaris, and multi-day budget tours

The 3-day Maasai Mara safari with Bencia Africa Adventure is one of the best tours I have taken anywhere in the world. I booked through WhatsApp with Alfred, traveled with George as the guide and driver, and spent three days traveling from Nairobi to Maasai Mara National Reserve for game drives, wildlife viewing, and two nights near the reserve. The drive from Nairobi was long and bumpy, but the safari itself more than made up for it with lions, cheetahs, elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras, and many other animals.

Why It Stands Out: This was a budget-friendly Maasai Mara safari that still delivered excellent wildlife viewing and strong guiding.

The day started with a boat ride on Gatun Lake, where I saw canal traffic, container ships, tugboats, rainforest scenery, and wildlife from the water. The Monkey Island portion included Geoffroy’s Tamarins, White-Faced Capuchins, and Mantled Howlers, while the Emberá village visit added a cultural side to the day with handicrafts, dance, and a short rainforest walk.

I went with Salt Life Eco Tours, and the full-day trip included a practice snorkel, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Shark Ray Alley, the Conch Shell Graveyard, a sunken shipwreck, lunch, gear, reserve fees, and guides who were in the water at most stops. The best part was snorkeling inside Hol Chan, where I saw coral, schools of fish, a sea turtle, a nurse shark, a stingray, and colorful reef fish.

Taking the Iceland Golden Circle tour in both summer and winter gave me a good comparison of one of Iceland’s most popular routes. The main stops were Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall, and the Geysir Geothermal Area, but the experience felt completely different depending on the season. In summer, the longer daylight and clearer paths made sightseeing easier, while the winter tour had fewer crowds, snow-covered landscapes, icy paths, and a much shorter window of daylight.

I took a 60-minute daytime cruise with Silverline River Cruises, starting near Dock 11 and passing major landmarks like the Hungarian Parliament Building, Chain Bridge, Buda Castle, Matthias Church, Gellért Hill, Liberty Bridge, Hotel Gellért, and the Bálna. The biggest highlight was seeing Parliament from the water, where it looked much larger and more impressive than I expected.

Why It Stands Out: This was not a luxury cruise, but it was affordable, scenic, and easy to fit into a Budapest itinerary.

Casablanca, Morocco

Best For: City tours, short stays, and first-time visitors to Morocco

A Casablanca city tour was the best way for me to see the city with limited time after arriving in Morocco. I booked with Premium Transfers and Tours, and the six-hour tour included the Casablanca Boardwalk, Boulevard Corniche, Rick’s Café, the Hassan II Mosque, and the Old Medina. Abdel adjusted the order of the stops to avoid incoming rain, and having both a guide and driver made the city much easier to experience in one afternoon.

Why It Stands Out: This tour helped me see Casablanca efficiently without spending the day figuring out transportation and timing.

Final Thoughts on the Best Tours Around the World

The best tours around the world are not always the most famous or expensive ones. For me, the tours that stand out are the ones that helped me understand a place better, made complicated logistics easier, or gave me access to landscapes, wildlife, history, or cultural experiences I would have struggled to plan alone.

Some of these tours were polished and well-organized, while others were messy but still worth doing because the destination was so memorable. That is part of real travel. A great tour does not have to be perfect, but it should leave you with a stronger connection to the place you visited.

This page is also meant to help readers find the world travel experiences that best fit how they like to travel, whether that means ancient ruins, wildlife, waterfalls, deserts, glaciers, snorkeling, city tours, or long day trips.
