Hampton Inn SJO Airport

Hampton Inn - San Jose Airport - Rates and Information

During my trip to Costa Rica, I stayed two non-consecutive nights at the Hampton Inn – San Jose Airport. I chose this hotel as it was within five minutes of SJO Airport and had a free shuttle that ran 24-hours.

My first stay was after arriving from Panama on Copa Aires (link), as I needed a place to relax before my morning flight to La Fortuna. My second stay was the night before my early morning departure from Costa Rica on Alaska Airlines to Los Angeles.

The cost of my room at the Hampton Inn was $99 for the first night and $103 for the second night. Both times I was upgraded from a classic king room to a king suite based on my Hilton Gold Status.

There are a few things about this hotel that I really enjoyed. First, despite being an airport hotel, there were three restaurants within walking distance. These restaurants included Denny’s, a local Costa Rican restaurant named Rosti Pollos, and a cafe inside Casino Fiesta Alajuela. The second big perk was the free shuttle. The shuttle transported me to three different locations during my stay. These locations were the international terminal, the domestic terminal, and the COVID-19 testing site.

Hampton Inn - San Jose Airport - The Room

The room at the Hampton Inn – San Jose Airport was quite comfortable. As I stated earlier, I was upgraded during both of my stays to a king suite. The room included a partial kitchen which had a refrigerator, sink, and microwave. Next to the sink were two complimentary bottles of water. From my research, it is safe to drink the water in Costa Rica, but I prefer to be extra cautious, so I stuck to bottled water.

Past the kitchen area was a sitting area with an oversized chair, television, and a workspace. The hotel had free standard WiFi and the option to pay for higher speeds.

The bathroom had a standard toilet and a rainshower-style shower. Next to the toilet/shower was another sink and a closet. Inside the closet was the room safe.

The best part of the room was the king-sized bed. It had the most comfortable sheets I’d ever slept on. Beside the best were two lamps and multiple plugins for power cords and USB cords.

Breakfast and Nearby Restaurants

The breakfast at Hampton Inn – San Jose Airport was fantastic. To limit the number of patrons dining at one time, all guests were required to reserve 20-minute time slots. There were plenty of slots available, and it appeared that the limit was around 25 people. The breakfast was served by a staff member and included scrambled and fried eggs, plantains, slow-cooked beef. There was also cereal, fruit, and a variety of bread and pastries available. To drink, there was filtered water, orange juice, and coffee. The breakfast was all you can eat, and I took advantage of filling my plate up multiple times.

One problem that I often have with airport hotels is that they are not within walking distance of restaurants. The Hampton Inn – San Jose Airport was within walking distance of three different restaurants. I tried two of them opting to eat at Rosti Pollos and the cafe at Casino Fiesta Alajuela.

At Rosti Pollo, I was not sure what to order. The menu was in Spanish, and none of the dishes were recognizable. I asked the cashier what she recommended, and I ended up with a cheese pancake with cut-up pieces of chicken in it. The best way to describe it is a quesadilla with no tortilla. I also had a slice of chocolate flan for dessert. Both were delicious.

My second meal was at the cafe at Casino Fiesta Alajuela. I decided to try the steak dinner. It came with fries and a vegetable but was not very impressive. The steak was thin and not a very high-quality cut of meat. In hindsight, I could have saved some money by going to Denny’s, which was the third restaurant option.
