About My Flight to Rome
Rome has been on my list of places I have wanted to visit my entire life. I visited Rome in the spring of 2017. Flights from Minneapolis to Rome have always been, but I was able to find a cheap flight from Minneapolis to Amsterdam using the strategies I employ searching with Google Flights. After arriving in Amsterdam and spending a few days touring, I flew from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport.
Despite Alitalia having terrible reviews and being considered one of Europe’s worst airlines, I booked with them due to limited direct options. My flight was $238 round trip and included a checked bag of under 23 kilograms.

Getting to Rome - My Flight on Alitalia
My flight was on Alitalia, which was surprisingly comfortable. One perk of Alitalia is that I could select the exit row at no additional cost. When I boarded, no one else was sitting in the exit row.
During my flight, I had a beautiful view of the French and Italian Alps. I had no one in my row, so I took out my tripod and captured a few of my best airplane window photos. From my experience, Alitalia is a great airline and provides similar service to any of the European carriers.
Getting to Rome - The Leonardo Express
Upon arriving in Rome, I quickly retrieved my luggage. Using a kiosk, I booked a round trip ticket on the Leonardo Express which took me to Roma Termini Station for a cost of €28 roundtrip. The train was easy to find, and I didn’t have to wait very long. During peak times the Leonardo Express departs every 30 minutes. It only took 32 minutes to reach Roma Termini Station via the Leonardo Express. From this station, it is easy to get to all parts of Rome as well as the major cities in Italy.
Getting to Rome - The Roma Pass
My hotel was located in between the Cavour and Colosseo stations on the Blue Line. Before getting on the Leonardo Express, I purchased a 72 hour Roma Pass.
This pass gives unlimited access to the Rome Metro and gets free admission to two tourist sights. To visit additional sights after the first two, I received discounted prices and a line pass. The pass was especially crucial at the Colosseum to avoid the long lines.
When the Leonardo Express arrived at Roma Termini Station, I walked to the blue line and took the metro to the Cavour stop. From there, I was easily able to get to my hotel.

Throughout the rest of my trip my Roma Pass made transportation extremely easy and free. The only train trip that was not covered was the Leonardo Express tickets as it is a private line.
