Vina Del Mar, Chile

Getting to Vina Del Mar

Vina Del Mar is about 10 k.m. from Valparaiso and is easily accessible via train or taxi.  I chose to take the train from Valparaiso-Puerto Station to Vina Del Mar Station.  The ride took around 15 minutes and cost C$2700 (USD$3.50) each way.  I was impressed with the cleanliness of the train, as well as wonderful street musician that played the guitar during our ride.

When I arrived at Vina Del Mar Station, the first thing I did was walk towards Vina Del Mar’s beautiful beaches.

What To See: Vina Del Mar

The first thing to do when visiting Vina Del Mar is to visit the Pacific Ocean beaches.  The sand is very different from the white sands of the Caribbean, and the water is much cooler.  During my visit, it was winter in the Southern Hemisphere, so the temperatures were only in the mid-50s.  Despite the cold weather, the beaches were still full of people enjoying playing in the sand and watching the giant waves crash into the shoreline.

After crossing the River Marga Bridge, I followed Avenue Peru towards Playa Acapulco.  Playa Acapulco is a public beach that had a large pier that went out into the Pacific.

Avenue Peru provided some wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean and the resorts that line the Vina Del Mar coast.

Most locations in Chile do not have many public bathrooms. If a tourist is lucky enough to find a bathroom, it usually does not have toilet paper, nor has it recently been cleaned. In Vina Del Mar, I decided to walk through the Vina Del Mar Casino. Inside the casino, I made a fantastic discovery. The casino bathrooms were spotless and clean. There was soap to wash my hands and toilet paper in the stalls. If you ever visit Vina Del Mar and need to use the restroom, the casino should be your “go-to” place.

I was only in Vina Del Mar for a few hours. Most of that time was spent walking the beach and looking at the Pacific Ocean.  From Playa Acapulco, I continued walking up the coastline towards Playa El Sol.  On the way, I found some rows of tents that contained an outdoor market. The market had everything from food to souvenirs. Prices were meant to be haggled, which was challenging with my limited Spanish.

On the way back to Vina Del Mar Station, I walked through a public park. The park was pretty well designed and appeared to be a hangout place for local children. I was especially amused by the pony rides.

I caught my train and returned to my hotel in Valparaiso. The next day I would be returning to Santiago to catch a flight to Calama. After arriving in Calama, I would take a shuttle to the tiny town of San Pedro de Atacama to begin touring the Atacama Desert.
