Why I Decided to Fly to Taroko Gorge on Uni Air
Finding flights to Taroko Gorge from Taipei is very easy. When I planned my trip to Taroko Gorge National Park, I booked a round-trip train ticket. After a miserable three-hour train ride, I began looking into other methods of transportation, including flying back to Taipei. I just couldn’t spend another three hours on the hot, humid, bouncy, smelly train.
Luckily, I was able to find space on a UNI Air flight. I was shocked to see that the price was $TWD990 ($31). The flight would be on a turbo-prop which would be my third time on a propellor aircraft. Regardless, it couldn’t have been worse than the train ride, so I decided to book my ticket. At the very least, I would enjoy reviewing Uni Air for my website.

Checking In and Security at Hualien Airport
I arrived 90 minutes before my flight and was the only one at the airport. Hualien Airport only has two round trips flights a day, both to Taipei’s Songshan Airport. I checked in, walked around the small airport, and purchased ice cream and a drink. Our flight was slightly delayed due to a late-arriving aircraft.
About 30 minutes before boarding, the security checkpoint opened. I had not planned on flying, so I had to sacrifice my expensive sunscreen as it was not carry-on friendly. I quickly made it through security and was told “thank you for your cooperation” by the very friendly agent.
My Flight from Hualien to Taipei
Within a few minutes, our Uni Air ATR72 Turbo Prop plane arrived. Boarding was quick, and within 15 minutes, we were in the air. The flying time for the 71 miles from Hualien to Taipei was only 25 minutes. This flight was the second shortest flight I’d ever flown.
I took my seat and found that for a small plane, there was plenty of leg room. It helped that there was no one sitting next to me. Despite the 25-minute flying time, everyone received a juice box of tea.
The plane landed at Taipei’s Songshan Airport, and I hopped on the metro to return to my hotel. It was a much more pleasant journey than 3 hours on the bumpy train. Many people are scared of propeller planes, but I find them to be a very smooth ride, sometimes even smoother than a jet. I was delighted I had thought about checking to see if there were flights. I highly recommend flying Uni Air to Taroko Gorge National Park.
