One of the highlights of my recent trip to Romania was a day excursion to the Black Sea coast. Starting from Bucharest, I embarked on a journey to Constanța, a vibrant coastal city known for its beautiful beaches and lively summer atmosphere.
Originally founded by the Greeks as the port city of Tomis, Constanța is Romania’s oldest continuously inhabited city and remains the country’s main gateway to the Black Sea coast.

The Journey to Constanța from Bucharest
My day began at the Bucharest train station, where I used my Romania Rail Pass to secure a seat reservation on the 11:00 AM train to Constanța. While the first-class accommodations were comfortable enough, the train’s slow pace and limited air conditioning made the journey a bit challenging. The trip usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the service.

Arriving at Constanța and Heading to the Beach
After a little over two hours, I arrived at Constanța Station. The Black Sea beaches seemed to be within walking distance, but the actual journey was longer due to elevation changes. Expect about a 20–30 minute walk to reach the main Constanța beach area, depending on where you’re headed. Nevertheless, the walk was pleasant, passing through tree-lined sidewalks, the bustling Constanța Harbor, and Old Town Constanța, where historic buildings and seaside views hint at the city’s maritime past.
A Day at the Beaches of Constanța
The beach area was bustling with activity, given the warm weather. I explored some of the piers near the beaches of Constanța, which provide great photo opportunities and views of the Black Sea. If you are looking for some striking Instagram photos, I highly recommend walking the piers before heading down to the sandy shore.
The best time to visit the Black Sea beaches of Constanța is from June through early September, when the water is warm and the beach bars are lively.
Are There Changing Rooms at the Constanța Beaches?
I spent about fifteen minutes walking around looking for a changing room, but my search came up empty. With no facilities available, I joined the locals and changed discreetly under my towel. Many Constanța beaches—such as Modern Beach and Neversea Beach—don’t have formal changing cabins, so plan accordingly.
Black Sea Algae and Seaweed at the Constanța Beaches
The Black Sea water was refreshing, though it did have a noticeable amount of seaweed and algae in the shallow areas. Undeterred, I waded into the cool, clear waves and enjoyed the surreal experience of swimming in the same Black Sea that borders the Crimean Peninsula, a region with a complex history between Russia and Ukraine.
Relaxing and Enjoying the Beach
After swimming, I relaxed on my beach towel and dried off under the sun. I recommend bringing a bag for your wet swimsuit and towel.
A few helpful tips for your visit to the Constanța beaches:
Numerous public beaches are lined up in a row, and most are free to access.
Amenities like sunbeds, cabanas, or umbrellas require a small rental fee (typically 30–60 RON/day).
There are plenty of beach bars and kiosks selling drinks—if you prefer still water, ask for “Apa Plata.”
For families with children, note that topless sunbathing is fairly common.
Returning to Bucharest
On my way back to the city center, I witnessed a few teenagers jumping off a pier into the water. I managed to capture the moment with my camera but missed the opportunity to share the photos with one of them.
As the sun set, I headed back toward the Constanța train station to return to Bucharest.
Dinner and a Seat Reservation Problem
Before catching my train, I enjoyed a delicious meal at a Lebanese restaurant near the city center. However, I ran into a small issue when I realized my seat reservation for the return train was actually for the following evening. Thankfully, I was able to secure a seat on a private train, ensuring a comfortable journey back to Bucharest after a long but rewarding day at the Black Sea.
