Ljubljana Castle is a striking landmark perched atop Castle Hill, just a short walk from the vibrant Prešernov trg and its iconic Triple Bridge.
Getting to Ljubljana Castle is easy. From Prešernov trg, simply cross the Ljubljanica River and head towards Mestni trg. Just past Mesti trg is the box office and funicular station.
For a quick ascent, purchase a combined castle and funicular ticket for €18 (as of July 2024). If you prefer a leisurely climb, enjoy the scenic walking paths that lead up to the castle. For those wanting to experience both the funicular and the walk, a one-way funicular ticket costs €3.30.

After disembarking the funicular atop Castle Hill, I made a beeline for the Ljubljana Castle Tower, home to the city’s most breathtaking panorama.
Reaching the top requires a climb up a winding metal staircase, but the reward is undeniable.
Once at the summit of the Ljubljana Castle Tower, the city unfolds like a captivating masterpiece. The castle courtyard lies directly below, while Ljubljana’s enchanting skyline stretches out in every direction.
While there’s another observation point on the castle walls, the Ljubljana Castle Tower reigns supreme. Its 360-degree vantage point offers an unparalleled perspective of the city’s beauty.
I visited Ljubljana Castle on the magical day of Christmas, and the view from the tower was truly unforgettable. Prešernov trg, adorned with its festive Christmas tree, looked like a scene from a postcard.
Take your time exploring the observation area, letting the stunning vistas of Ljubljana wash over you. Every angle offers a new and captivating perspective of this charming city.
I spent some time wandering around the castle grounds, even enjoying the unique perspective from the outside of the castle walls. I was fascinated by the intricate drainage system.
The Christmas Market in the castle courtyard was a magical touch. I loved strolling through the stalls and soaking up the festive atmosphere.
I decided to walk completely around the castle. The views from the outside were just as impressive as those from the tower.
I even caught a glimpse of Kongresni trg.
I couldn’t resist grabbing a group of people for a photo in front of one of the castle’s beautiful windows. Maybe one day they will even find this page.
The Chapel of St. George is a must-see for history buffs. As one of the castle’s oldest structures, dating back to the late 1400s, it offers a fascinating glimpse into Ljubljana’s past.
I was captivated by the Chapel of St. George. Its historic charm and serene atmosphere made it a peaceful escape from the bustling castle grounds.
While I didn’t spend a lot of time exploring the castle’s exhibits, I did find a few interesting pieces. The weapon displays were particularly fascinating. It’s incredible to see the evolution of warfare firsthand.
I was surprised to learn that Ljubljana Castle once served as a penitentiary for World War I prisoners. This unexpected piece of history added depth to my understanding of the castle’s role over the centuries.
As the city of dragons, Ljubljana certainly lives up to its name. The castle is adorned with dragon motifs everywhere you look. It’s a fun and whimsical touch that adds to the castle’s charm.
A tour is not needed to enjoy Ljubljana Castle. That being said, I know some people prefer to be led around by a local guide. Below are three tours that caught my eye.
