One attraction that can be overlooked during the winter season is the Salzburg Christmas Markets. The Salzburg Christmas Markets are definitely worth visiting, and tourists can spend anywhere from a few minutes to many hours wandering between stalls, looking for holiday decorations, and sampling delicious treats. If you are planning Christmas in Salzburg, be sure to leave time to explore at least one of these markets.

The main Salzburg Christmas Market, known locally as the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt, is located in Residenzplatz, near the arches of Salzburg Cathedral and the entrance to DomQuartier Salzburg, right in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town. The markets wind around the Salzburg Cathedral, stretching from Residenzplatz across the cathedral arches into Domplatz (Cathedral Square) and ending near the Sphaera (Gold Ball) sculpture. At Mozartplatz, there is a skating rink where people can ice skate during the Christmas season, adding even more festive atmosphere to Salzburg at Christmas.

The Salzburg Christmas Markets typically open between 9:00 and 10:00 am and close between 8:30 and 9:00 pm, depending on the day of the week. Another popular Christmas decoration was the nutcracker. There were multiple kiosks selling nutcrackers at the Salzburg Christmas Markets.

In addition to holiday decorations, there was a variety of chocolates, candies, and sweets being sold at the Salzburg Christmas Markets. Many stalls also offer traditional Austrian treats and giftable food items, which fit perfectly with the cozy feel of Christmas in Salzburg, Austria.
I did not make any purchases during my time walking through the Salzburg Christmas Markets. Despite coming home empty-handed, I thoroughly enjoyed walking through the Christmas Markets and looking at the beautiful decorations and delicious candy. Even an hour or two at the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt gives you a great taste of the atmosphere—twinkling lights, music, decorations, and seasonal food—without needing a full day devoted just to the markets.
