Frequently Asked Questions About the Salzburg Christmas Markets

When Do the Salzburg Christmas Markets Start and End?

The main Salzburger Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz usually opens on the second-to-last Thursday in November and runs until January 1. For the 2025/2026 season, official dates are November 20, 2025 to January 1, 2026. Other Salzburg Christmas markets, such as those at Mirabellplatz or Hellbrunn Palace, often follow similar late-November start dates but may end earlier, such as just before or on New Year’s Eve. Always check the current year’s schedule before you travel.

Where Are the Salzburg Christmas Markets in Salzburg Old Town?

The best-known Salzburg Christmas Market is centered on Domplatz and Residenzplatz, right in Salzburg’s historic Old Town at the foot of Fortress Hohensalzburg and around Salzburg Cathedral. From there, stalls extend beneath the cathedral arches and toward the Sphaera (Gold Ball). Additional Christmas markets in Salzburg are often held at Mirabellplatz, Hellbrunn Palace, and other locations around the city, but the Domplatz and Residenzplatz market is the classic Christmas in Salzburg experience.

Are the Salzburg Christmas Markets Worth Visiting If I Only Have One Day in Salzburg?

Yes. If you only have one day in Salzburg at Christmas, it is still worth visiting at least the main Salzburg Christmas Market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz. The market is compact and centrally located, so you can easily combine it with a walk through the Old Town, a visit to Salzburg Cathedral, or a trip up to Fortress Hohensalzburg. Even an hour or two at the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt gives you a great taste of the atmosphere—twinkling lights, music, decorations, and seasonal food—without needing a full day devoted just to the markets.
