Getting to the Dubrovnik Cable Car
The Dubrovnik Cable Car was effortless to walk to from my hotel. To get to the Dubrovnik Cable Car, I went towards the Pile Gate and then followed the outside walls of the city towards the harbor. When I reached the Fire Station, I turned away from the city walls and followed the sign towards the cable car.

About The Dubrovnik Cable Car
Built in 1969, The Dubrovnik Cable Car was once the only operating cable car on the Adriatic Sea. In addition to providing great views of the City Walls, the cable car also provided transportation to the Imperial Fort.
The cable car’s operating hours during the winter are from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The car departs as soon as there are enough people, or every 15 minutes, whichever comes first.
There are signs all over the Old Town of “certified vendors” selling cable car tickets. Purchasing ahead of time is entirely not necessary. There is a ticket office right inside the cable car station offering tickets at the same price, HRK 150. I caught the first cable car of the day. It departed at precisely 9:00 am.

The Views from the Top of Srd Hill
The cable car ride takes about 3 minutes from the departure station to the arrival station at the top of Srd Hill. The viewing point provided an excellent view of the city walls, the Old Town, and the entire coastal area of Dubrovnik. For the best views of the Old Town, there is a pathway with various viewing points. I spent around 30 minutes walking around and taking pictures. For people who want to enjoy the view a little longer, there is a restaurant that overlooks the Old Town.
This area was once full of a mix of oak and pine forests. During the Croatian War for Independence, the forests of Srd Hill burned to the ground in numerous fires. Srd Hill found itself in the middle of one of the fiercest battles, the Siege of Dubrovnik. Looking opposite of the Old Town, the terrain today is mostly barren.
There are two crosses at the top of Srd Hill. The cross closest to the Dubrovnik Cable Car station was built in 1935 to celebrate the 2,000th birthday of Jesus Christ.
Fort Imperial
At the top of the hill, there is a second large cross that was built by the French during the Napoleonic Era. The French used to have a defensive structure called Fort Imperial that was located near the cross. Fort Imperial was an active military institution until Croatia received its independence. The most recent battle the fort was involved in was the Siege of Dubrovnik. Today, Fort Imperial serves as the Museum of Croatian Independence.
I took the 9:45 am cable car back down. This day was my final day in Dubrovnik, and I had to be at the airport at 11:00 am. The cable car was an excellent way to begin my day.
