About My Trip to Croatia
Forget the usual summer rush! Croatia in December surprised me with its magical winter charm. The historic cities of Dubrovnik and Split were my starting point. Wandering their ancient streets, I felt transported back in time. Towing fortresses and charming squares whispered tales of Croatia’s rich history.
As the year drew to a close, I craved a snowy escape. Plitvice Lakes National Park beckoned, and the sight that awaited me was a postcard come to life: cascading waterfalls framed by snow-covered trees. The crisp winter air and peaceful serenity were a welcome change of pace.
Finally, it was time to celebrate! New Year’s in Zagreb was an unforgettable experience. The city pulsed with vibrant energy, fueled by festive decorations and joyful crowds. It was the perfect way to ring in the new year.

Dubrovnik
Old Town Dubrovnik
I visited Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the highlight of my visit to Dubrovnik. Old Town is free to enter and can be explored without a guide. There are multiple entrances, including the Pile Gate, which is lit up at night. I recommend using the Pile Gate as a starting point because it is close to many other attractions.
Inside the walls, there are many interesting things to see, including Onofrio’s Fountain, St. Savior Church, Placa Stradun (the main street), St. Blaise Church, Orlando’s Column, and the Clock Tower. During the holiday season, the town is decorated with Christmas lights and festive decorations. There are also many restaurants inside the walls, including St. Blaise Konoba, which serves delicious Croatian food.
Walking the Dubrovnik City Walls
I walked the city walls of Dubrovnik, Croatia and it was a fantastic experience! The walk itself is a great way to get some exercise and take in the beauty of the city. As you walk along the walls, you’re treated to panoramic views of the Old Town and the sparkling Adriatic Sea below.
I recommend starting your walk at Pile Gate. By doing this, you save the best views for last, which makes the whole experience even more rewarding. The entire walk took me about an hour to complete. Don’t forget to bring your camera, as you’ll definitely want to capture some of the amazing views from the walls!
The Dubrovnik Cable Car
Riding the Dubrovnik Cable Car was a must-do on my trip to Croatia. The quick journey offered a whole new perspective on the city. As I ascended, Dubrovnik’s Old Town shrunk beneath me, transforming into a miniature world of red rooftops. The view then exploded into a breathtaking panorama of the turquoise Adriatic Sea dotted with the Elaphiti Islands. The cable car might only take 3 minutes, but the memories – and the photos! – will last a lifetime.
Accommodations in Dubrovnik - Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik
I stayed at the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik, a hotel located near the Pile Gate of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. My room was a classic king room with a view of the Old Town. It also included a complimentary breakfast buffet, which was a nice perk. The staff at the hotel were friendly and accommodating, making for a pleasant stay overall.
Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel!
Split
Accommodations in Split - Radisson Blu Split
I stayed at the Radisson Blu Resort and Spa in Split, Croatia, and let me tell you, it was amazing! I was lucky enough to get an upgrade to a suite as soon as I arrived, and the view from my room was incredible. The suite itself was very spacious and had everything I could need, including a balcony, living room, bathroom, and a rainfall shower.
The food at the hotel’s restaurants was delicious, especially the steak and Croatian desserts. They also had a great American breakfast buffet. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel!
Self-Guided Walking Tour of Split
I spent a day exploring Split, Croatia on a self-guided walking tour! It’s a great way to see the city for free.
I started my walk at the Riva Promenade, a waterfront harbor lined with restaurants and shops. From there, I made my way along the Adriatic Coastline, taking in the beautiful views.
One of the highlights of my walk was Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s massive, so I’m glad I wore good walking shoes! I also saw the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and the Bell Tower.
If you’re planning a trip to Split, I highly recommend this walking tour. It’s a great way to see the city at your own pace and get some exercise in the process. Just be sure to grab a map beforehand so you don’t get lost!
Plitvice Lakes
A Winter Visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park from Zagreb
I ventured to Plitvice Lakes National Park in the winter, and it was an experience unlike any other. The park, known for its cascading waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes, transforms into a winter wonderland during the colder months. While the crowds are significantly smaller compared to the summer season, there’s a trade-off: visibility can be reduced due to snowfall. Coming prepared is key – make sure you pack waterproof boots and warm clothes!
Fortunately, navigating the park in winter is still manageable. There’s a network of well-maintained walking paths that wind through the snowy landscape, and a ferry operates on the lakes to help you get around. Even with the winter chill, the beauty of Plitvice Lakes shines through. The contrast between the snow-covered trees and the vibrant turquoise water of the lakes is something I won’t soon forget.
Zagreb
Accommodations in Zagreb - Hotel Dubrovnik
I stayed at Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb, Croatia, and it was a good choice for my trip. The hotel is located right in the main plaza of the city center, which makes it super convenient. Being so close to the action was a plus, especially because I was visiting for New Year’s Eve – I could just walk right out to the festivities in Ban Jelačić Square!
The hotel itself has a cool design. The rooms are situated around an indoor courtyard, which gives it a unique atmosphere. My room wasn’t huge, but it had everything I needed for a short stay – a comfy queen bed, a desk to work at, a TV, and a bathroom with a standup shower.
New Year's Eve 2019 in Zagreb
I rang in the New Year in Zagreb, Croatia, and it was an unforgettable experience! The main festivities took place in Ban Jelačić Square, in the heart of the city. The atmosphere there was electric – the entire square was packed with people.
The celebration got bigger and louder as the night progressed, with live music and entertainment leading up to the big moment. Then, at the stroke of midnight, the sky explodes in a dazzling fireworks display!
