Two Days in Aktau, Kazakhstan
Two Days in Aktau, Kazakhstan – Relaxing on the Caspian Sea
The last city I visited in Kazakhstan was Aktau, a coastal city on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. I chose Aktau as my final stop because I wanted a slower, more relaxing end to my journey. The Caspian coastline and seaside promenade are the city’s main attractions — perfect for winding down after exploring the rest of Kazakhstan.
If you’re looking for an Aktau travel guide focused on a peaceful stay rather than sightseeing marathons, this page captures exactly that—two easygoing days enjoying the sea breeze and simple coastal life.

Arriving in Aktau
I spent just two days in Aktau, staying within the city limits and skipping any long tours. My flight from Almaty to Aktau on FlyArystan took about three hours — it was my third domestic flight on the airline, and once again, the experience was smooth and efficient.
After landing late in the evening, I used Yandex Go to reach the city center. The 30-minute ride cost about $10 USD, which felt very reasonable for the distance.
Where I Stayed in Aktau
I stayed at the Dostyk Business Hotel, conveniently located near the Eternal Flame World War II Memorial and about a ten-minute walk from the coast. My room was spacious and cool — a blessing in Aktau’s hot summer weather — and the hotel’s restaurant was so good that I ate most of my meals there.

For visitors wondering about things to do in Aktau, the best experiences don’t require rushing from place to place. Instead, take time to enjoy the long seaside walks, quiet viewpoints, and the soothing rhythm of the Caspian Sea.
Walking the Skalnaya Tropa Promenade
For sightseeing, I focused on the Skalnaya Tropa Promenade, which translates to “rocky path.” The walkway follows the Caspian Sea coastline, passing through sculpted limestone cliffs with stairways and viewpoints built into the rocks.
The Caspian Sea is saltwater, but far less salty than the open ocean — only about 1.2 percent salinity, roughly one-third that of seawater — because it’s a land-locked inland sea fed by rivers such as the Volga. The water felt noticeably milder on the skin.
While beautiful, the Aktau shoreline isn’t ideal for swimming. Much of it is rocky, with slippery seaweed and small pools of stagnant water. I found a few shallow spots where I could wade knee-deep, but Aktau is more of a promenade and sea-view city than a traditional beach destination.
Evening on the Caspian
That first evening, I walked south along the Skalnaya Tropa Promenade toward Cape Melovoy. As the sun set, the promenade came alive — glowing lights illuminated the cliffs, and families and couples strolled the path to escape the heat. It was a peaceful, local atmosphere, and one of my favorite evenings of the trip.
If you’re exploring Aktau attractions in the evening, this coastal walk is hard to beat. Watching the waves crash below as the limestone turns golden at sunset is one of the city’s simplest pleasures.
Day Two – Pier and Lighthouse Views
The next morning, I followed the promenade again, this time covering it from end to end. Near the southern stretch, I reached the Arenda Katerov Aktau Pier, a small marina where locals rent boats or take short trips on the Caspian Sea. From there, a short climb led up to Cape Melovoy and the unique Melovoy Lighthouse, famously built on top of a residential apartment building.
From the steps beside the lighthouse, I had sweeping views of Aktau Harbor and the rocky coastline stretching along the Caspian. The path along the high ground offered more viewpoints and glimpses of elegant seaside homes before looping back toward the city.
Caspian Sea Video Highlights
In this video, I walk the Skalnaya Tropa Promenade in Aktau, following the rocky Caspian Sea cliffs to Cape Melovoy and the Melovoy Lighthouse. Along the way, I looked for places to wade into the water, observed the towering limestone cliffs, and continued as far as the Arenda Katerov Aktau Pier, where the promenade meets the sea.
My Final Night in Kazakhstan as a Tourist
That evening, I returned to the Dostyk Business Hotel, enjoyed dinner at the restaurant, and packed for my flight home. The next morning, I flew to Astana, spent the night near the airport, and then continued on to the United States via Warsaw, Poland.
Although my time in Aktau was short, I’m glad I included it in my Kazakhstan itinerary. The city offered a relaxing change of pace, striking seaside views, and my first glimpse of the legendary Caspian Sea. For anyone planning a calm coastal stop, this Aktau travel guide shows that sometimes the best Aktau attractions are simply the waves, the walkway, and a bit of unhurried time to breathe.
