The 2-28 Memorial Peace Park memorializes the victims of the February 28, 1947 uprising. The massacre killed over 20,000 anti-government protesters and marked the beginning of the White Terror where tens of thousands of people were killed, disappeared, or were imprisoned. I chose to visit the 2-28 Memorial Peace Park because it was close to my hotel and I thought the shade from the trees would help keep me cool during the hottest part of the day.

Visiting the 2-28 Memorial Peace Park
After taking the train from my airport hotel to Taipei Main Station, I checked in at my hotel the CitizenM Taipei Northgate. It was too early to get my room, so I decided to go to 2-28 Peace Memorial Park.
It seemed that many people had a similar idea to try to get into the shade. The Peace Park was full of people reading, doing yoga, meditating, working out, and resting on benches. I walked around for about thirty minutes looking at the lakes, temples and following the different paths. There is a monument that memorializes all of the people who died in the middle of the Peace Park. Visitors can enter the memorial and look down to see a fountain. The monument also offers a fantastic view of the city.
I thought that this was a perfect first stop as it allowed me a chance to be in the shade and to experience a significant part of Taiwan’s History. I also got a chance to see quite a few locals going about their daily business. Since I was so close to it, I decided my next stop should be Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Park.
