Walking to Lake Bled from Lesce-Bled Station

Is it Possible to Walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled

Is it possible to walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled? That was the question I asked myself as I set out to view one of Slovenia’s most beautiful attractions. According to my research, it is just over a five-kilometer walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled. While it is quite a distance, it is possible to walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled.

Before I get into my walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled, I want to remind anyone reading this that there is a closer station to Lake Bled. This station is named Bled Jezero. Bled Jezero Station is located only 2.5 kilometers from Lake Bled and is a much easier walk.

The reason I had to walk from Lesce-Bled Station was because of maintenance that was being done on the tracks. Due to the maintenance, trains were only running from Ljubljana to Jesenice and I was unable to reach Bled Jezero Station.

How to Walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled

My visit to Lake Bled was during December of 2023, and my goal was to reach the lake as soon as the sun came up. As mentioned above, there was work being done on the tracks, and trains were only running from Ljubljana as far as Jesenice.

I took an early morning train from Ljubljana to Lesce-Bled Station, arriving just after 8:00 am. While there was bus service from Lesce-Bled Station to the town of Bled, I decided to walk.

The first step to walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled is to cross the train tracks and walk through the tiny town of Lesce by following Route 635. It takes about twenty minutes to walk from Lesce-Bled Station through the town of Lesce.

At this point, Route 635 runs into Route 209. Along Route 209 is a bike/pedestrian path that should lead all the way to Lake Bled. This path passes some beautiful sights, including a bridge over the Sava River.

There are a few areas where the path splits, but the correct way is marked with an arrow and the word “Bled.”

My walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled was in December of 2023, and eventually, the path towards Lake Bled hit a detour. From the looks of it, this may be a long-term detour. The detour was just after the River Camping Bled Campground and required a turn onto Ljublijanska Cesta.

This detour was marked by signs with a photo of a bicycle and a person walking with an arrow. Ljublijanska Cesta had quite an incline, and it took a lot of energy to make it up this road.

Eventually, I made it to the top of the hill, and after walking through the tiny town of Koritno, I was back on my way to Lake Bled. The rest of the walk was flat, cutting across farmland. There were bus stops along this route, but I was determined to walk the entire way from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled.

The detour added another 3 kilometers of walking, and by the time Bled Castle came into view, I had already walked more than the initially expected five kilometers.

At this point, I was really regretting my decision as my legs were super sore, as was my back from carrying my backpack. Still, by the time I reached the town of Bled and eventually Lake Bled, I realized that I had seen parts of Slovenia that I would have missed had I taken the bus or a taxi from Lesce-Bled Station.

So my advice is as follows; yes, it is possible to walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled, and it is quite a picturesque walk. But at the same time, with the detour, it ended up taking almost two hours to walk a distance of over seven kilometers. I’ll let you make the final decision on whether you want to walk from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled.

Is Lake Bled Worth Visiting?

Whether you decide to walk from Lesce Bled Station or find a different method of reaching Lake Bled, it is definitely worth visiting. Be sure to visit Bled Castle, St. Martina Parish Church, and Bled Island. In the middle of Bled Island is another church known as the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary.

In addition to visiting these sights, I also walked the entire perimeter of Lake Bled. Adding this distance to the distances I had already covered put me over 21 kilometers for the day.

Better Ways to Get to Lake Bled

I did not walk back to Lesce-Bled Station, nor did I even walk as far as Bled Jezero Station. Instead, I took the bus back to Ljubljana Station. Bled Bus Station is located just a few hundred meters away from the shoreline of Lake Bled. A ticket on the Arivva Bus cost just €3. In addition to being just a few minutes walk from Lake Bled, it was also much cheaper and faster than taking the train. I was back at Ljubljana Station in just over an hour.

The other way to get to Lake Bled is to take the train to Bled Jezaro Station. From Bled Jezaro, it is a much shorter walk.

If for some reason, you can only take the train to Lesce-Bled Station, you can take a bus from Lesce-Bled Station to Lake Bled. According to the schedule, these buses run every hour or every 30 minutes, depending on the time of day.

Finally, for those who have a car, driving is likely the easiest way to get to Lake Bled. From Ljubljana to Bled by car, it should only take 45 minutes to drive the 50 or so kilometers.
