10 Tips for Visiting Postojna Cave
There are many websites that offer information on how to visit Postojna Cave. During my recent visit, I came up with this list of 10 tips that I wish I had known before I visited Postojna Cave. I hope these tips are helpful and help you enjoy your time at this magnificent cave.
Tip 1: Purchase the audio guide. Otherwise, you will tour Postojna Cave with a guide who rushes you.
There are two ways to tour Postojna Cave. The first one is on your own with an audio guide. Otherwise, you will be led around by a guide that speaks your language. Visitors who are using the audio guide get to enter the cave first, and the groups with the guides follow shortly after. The guides were rushing their groups and pressuring them to move faster. I highly recommend purchasing the audio guide, which only costs €3 to be able to tour at your own pace.
Tip 2: Be first in line to enter the Postojna Cave and the last one to leave the cave.
The second tip also helps provide you with better opportunities to see the cave. One of my few gripes about this awesome cave was how fast the guides rushed everyone through Postojna Cave. To maximize your time, try to be first in line. This way, you will be one of the first people in the audio group. As you go through Postojna Cave, you can go slowly and end up exiting amongst the last people of the audio group. This strategy allowed me a chance to go slower and get good photographs.
Tip 3: Do not try to take photos pf Postojna Cave on the train. There are plenty of opportunities for photos later in the tour.
A visit to Postojna Cave begins with a 10-minute train ride. Do not try to take photos during the 10-minute ride. They will be blurry, and the cave will be unrecognizable. There are plenty of spectacular photo opportunities after exiting the train as visitors to Postojna Cave take a 60 to 90-minute walk through the various chambers of the cave.
Tip 4: Wear proper shoes. Postojna Cave is slippery.
The floor of Postojna Cave is extremely slippery and damp. I almost slipped multiple times and could have damaged my camera and hit my head. Be sure to wear rubber-soled shoes with good grip.
Tip 5: Postojna Cave is not cold. It's 50°F (10°C).
I had read multiple articles about how cold Postojna Cave is inside. The cave is 50° F (10° C) year round. Unless you are from an extremely warm climate, you will not need anything more than a sweatshirt or a light jacket.
Tip 6: Postojna Cave drips even when it is not raining.
There are many parts of Postojna Cave where water is dripping. These drips occur even when it is not raining. If you are bringing anything that shouldn’t get wet, I highly recommend having a waterproof backpack or dry bag.
Tip 7: Even if you find the Postojna Cave audio guide boring, listen to the first 30 seconds of each section.
Throughout Postojna Cave, there are approximately 12 locations marked with numbers. These numbers tell you what number to type in on the audio tour. The audio is sort of scientific-sounding and tells you a lot of facts about caves and how they form. If you find the audio boring, just listen to the first 30 or so seconds, as it will tell you what part of the cave you are located in.
Tip 8: Turn off your flash when photographing Postojna Cave.
Before entering Postojna Cave, you will get a long lecture about why pictures slow down the tour and ruin the experience for other guests. Throughout the tour, I had no issues taking pictures as long as my flash was turned off. The people who took photos with their flash drew attention and were reprimanded by the guides. In addition to drawing attention, the flash of a camera can damage the cave and harm the tiny creatures that live in Postojna Cave. In Postojna Cave, take all the photos you want, but ensure that your flash is turned off.
Tip 9: Postojna Cave souvenirs get cheaper the further you get from the cave.
There is a souvenir store inside Postojna Cave. The items in this store are at least double the price of the items nearby the entrance to Postojna Cave. If you want to buy souvenirs, they get cheaper the further you get from the entrance to Postojna Cave.
Tip 10: Take the bus to Postojna Cave instead of the train.
There are two ways to get to Postojna Cave using public transportation. You can take the train to Postojna (train) Station or take the bus to Postojna Bus Station. Postojna Bus Station is much closer to the park than Postojna (train) station.
