My Experience Touring the Atacama Desert’s Valle de la Muerte
About My Trip to the Atacama Desert
Visiting the Atacama Desert was an exciting experience but also a learning curve for me as a rookie traveler. I knew I wanted to explore the iconic Valle de la Muerte—or Death Valley—but wasn’t sure of the best way to navigate this remote desert region.
Opting to take a tour felt like the safest option, so I booked multiple excursions with Cosmo Andino Expeditions. While their services were good at times, there were enough issues that I would not recommend them to future travelers. Below is an overview of my tour of the Atacama Desert’s Valle de la Muerte and the nearby Mars Valley, along with tips for those planning their own journey.

Tour the Atacama Desert's Valle de la Muerte - My Experience
Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley) is one of the driest and most surreal landscapes in the world. My first tour in the Atacama Desert took me through Valle de la Muerte with an English-speaking guide who provided context on the area’s unique geography. The tour lasted approximately six hours and cost around $65 USD. This desert landscape is a photographer’s paradise, with striking rock formations, expansive sand dunes, and the backdrop of the majestic Licancabur Volcano.
Coyote Rock – A Scenic Stop in Valle de la Muerte
One of our first stops was the famous Coyote Rock, a scenic viewpoint that offers incredible panoramic views of the Valle de la Muerte. Our guide explained that the rock’s name was inspired by the classic cartoon character Wile E. Coyote, who often chased the Road Runner. Standing on Coyote Rock was completely safe, and the rock is known for its breathtaking views rather than any real danger.
Running Down the Sand Dunes of Valle de la Muerte
Our next experience was the iconic sand dunes of the Atacama Desert. Thankfully, our driver dropped us off at the top of the dunes, allowing us to run down without needing to make the difficult climb back up.
The sand dunes in Death Valley were powder-soft, cushioning any falls and adding to the adventure. However, the fine sand does tend to get everywhere—from shoes to camera bags—so be prepared for a bit of a cleanup!
While most dunes are safe for descending, some contain hidden rocks, so always consult your guide to avoid unsafe areas.
Exploring the Mars Valley (Valle de Marte) in the Atacama Desert
Although technically part of Valle de la Muerte, the Mars Valley—or Valle de Marte—is distinct for its red rock landscapes that resemble the surface of Mars. During this tour stop, I explored the Mars-like topography on my own, walking a few kilometers into the valley and admiring the unusual formations and salt deposits that sparkle in the light.
The combination of red rocks and white salt deposits makes Mars Valley one of the most unique sights in the Atacama Desert. As the sun set, the red hues of Valle de Marte became even more pronounced, creating a landscape that truly feels out of this world.
Practical Tips for Touring Valle de la Muerte and Mars Valley
Touring Valle de la Muerte and Mars Valley without a guide can be challenging due to remote roads, extreme temperatures, and the lack of cell service. Here are a few practical tips:
- Tour or Guide Recommended: For safety and convenience, book a tour with a reliable agency to ensure you’re well-prepared and have transportation arranged.
- Choose Your Tour Wisely: While I initially toured with Cosmo Andino Expeditions, I cannot confidently recommend them due to inconsistencies in their service. If you’re booking through an aggregator like Viator, double-check the provider’s name to avoid issues.
- Check Weather Conditions: Conditions in the Atacama Desert can be extreme, so bring plenty of water, sun protection, and warm clothes for cooler nights.
