Flamingos National Reserve

Overview of Flamingos National Reserve

The Flamingos National Reserve (locally known as Los Flamencos National Reserve) spans approximately 290 square miles in the Atacama Desert within the Antofagasta Region of Chile. This reserve is divided into seven sections, each with its unique landscapes and ecosystems. Notably, the Valle de la Luna and Lagunas Miscanti and Miñiques are also part of the Flamingos National Reserve, though their unique topographies have earned them dedicated sections in my travel blog.

In this section, I’ll focus on my experience at Salar de Atacama, the largest salt flat in the Atacama, and home to the Chaxa Lagoon. If you’re interested in exploring the other regions within Flamingos National Reserve, check the related content links below.

Visiting Chaxa Lagoon in Salar de Atacama

On the second day of my Atacama Desert tour, I visited Chaxa Lagoon, a breathtaking area within the Salar de Atacama Salt Flat. Known for its flamingo population, the lagoon has brackish waters that support brine shrimp, the primary food source for the Andean, Chilean, and James’s flamingos that inhabit the area.

When we arrived at Chaxa Lagoon, we followed a well-marked path through fields of salt deposits, providing close-up views of the flamingos.

The early morning temperatures were barely above freezing, and the flamingos clustered together in a tight group, known as a flamboyance, creating an awe-inspiring scene against the vast salt flat.

The Unique Landscape of Chaxa Lagoon

While the flamingos were captivating, the surrounding landscape was equally stunning. The sunrise over the salt flats illuminated the landscape, casting a shimmering effect on the salt crystals. Despite appearances, there was no ice on the ground—just pure, glistening salt.

Curious about the terrain, I even tasted the salt! Our guide informed us that the Salar de Atacama has significant lithium deposits beneath the salt crust, and the Chilean government is considering further lithium extraction in the area. While this is still uncertain, the potential for restricted access makes visiting Chaxa Lagoon a truly unique experience that may not be available forever.

How to Get to Chaxa Lagoon – Distance and Time

Getting to Chaxa Lagoon takes about one hour each way from San Pedro de Atacama, with the road winding through the remote Atacama landscape. After spending an hour at Chaxa Lagoon, our tour continued to the Piedras Rojas and Lagunas Miscanti and Miñiques, other highlights of the region. You can read more about these destinations in my related blog sections.
