About My WestJet Flight from Minneapolis to Edmonton
I was thrilled in early 2023 when I learned that Canadian air carrier WestJet would be starting service from Minneapolis-St. Paul to Edmonton and Saskatoon. It would not be long before I booked my first WestJet flight from MSP, an October trip from Minneapolis to Edmonton.
The cost of my flight was $79 each way, with an additional cost of $29 to upgrade to an exit-row seat. This fare was introductory, and I fully expected the prices to increase in the future. If not, I guess there will be quite a few trips to Canada in the future.
While my flight was to Edmonton, I decided this trip would focus on visiting Banff and Jasper National Parks, two of Canada’s most famous destinations. Both parks had been on my radar for a long time, and with WestJet’s cheap airfares from Minneapolis to Edmonton, it seemed like the perfect time to take the trip. I thought that WestJet provided excellent service between Minneapolis and Edmonton, and I hoped that WestJet would consider service to additional cities from Minneapolis in the future.
Checking In for My WestJet Flight at MSP
WestJet check-in at MSP was next to the Spirit Airlines counter in Terminal 1. There were no kiosks, and everyone had to check in with an agent. For anyone searching for the WestJet terminal at Minneapolis airport, the main thing to remember is that WestJet uses Terminal 1 at MSP.
At the Gate and Boarding
WestJet flight from MSP typically depart from Gate C9. Since gates can change, I always recommend verifying WestJet’s gate when arriving at the airport.
The boarding process for WestJet was pretty similar to most airlines that I have flown. WestJet passengers were grouped into three zones. Zone 1 included premium cabin travelers and elite-status passengers who boarded first. Zone 2 was for passengers seated toward the back of the plane, along with some premium members who had not boarded in Zone 1, while Zone 3 was for passengers seated in the middle and front of the aircraft.
One difference I noticed was that before Zone 2 was called, some passengers were allowed to pre-board. Pre-boarding is usually reserved for families who need extra time and people with disabilities, but on my flight, passengers seated in the exit row were also allowed to board early. Since my seat was in the exit row, I was able to board before my group was called.
The pre-boarding was not particularly helpful, as we had to wait on the jet bridge for close to fifteen minutes before we were allowed on the plane.
The flight from Minneapolis to Edmonton was on WestJet’s Boeing 737-800. This aircraft had two exit rows in the center of the plane. I was in seat 13D, which was the first of the two exit rows.
My exit row seat on WestJet was a typical exit row seat, and I had plenty of legroom during my MSP to Edmonton flight. One nice surprise was that each seat had a universal power outlet. This power outlet also contained a USB charging port.
Food and Beverage Service
There was one beverage service during the roughly two-and-a-half-hour flight from Minneapolis to Edmonton. In addition to receiving their choice of drink, each passenger also received either pretzels or cookies.
Since I was attempting to review this WestJet flight, I wanted to sample some of WestJet’s food for sale. I decided to order a three-cheese macaroni. The three-cheese macaroni was pretty disappointing, as the noodles were still crunchy. I think it likely needed a few more minutes in the microwave.
There was no seatback entertainment on this WestJet flight from Minneapolis to Edmonton. Entertainment was available through the WestJet app. The only problem was that the internet connection kept going out throughout the flight. The lack of internet caused the entertainment to malfunction as well.
In Flight WiFi
I purchased WiFi onboard my WestJet flight for C$22. The WiFi worked for about twenty minutes and then was sporadic for the rest of the flight. A quick email to customer service helped secure a full refund.
Customs and Immigration - Edmonton Airport
Upon arriving at Edmonton International Airport, I had to clear customs and passport control. On my trip, passport control at Edmonton International Airport involved visiting a kiosk and scanning my passport. I was issued a sheet of paper and told to hand it to the immigration officer after I collected my baggage.
Baggage reclaim at Edmonton International Airport was extremely slow. It took almost 90 minutes for our bags to arrive. Once I received my bag, I was asked by the immigration officer about the purpose of my visit and where I would be staying. Within five minutes of retrieving my luggage, I was waiting in the rental car line for my rental car.
