About My Trip to Belize

Belize offered the perfect balance of adventure and slow island life, with Caye Caulker serving as a relaxed base for exploring the country’s top highlights. Over five days, I combined world-class snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a scenic aerial tour of the Great Blue Hole, and a full day trip to Ambergris Caye, all without constantly changing hotels. Traveling by ferry and short domestic flights made island hopping easy while adding memorable views of reefs, mangroves, and turquoise water from the air.

Snorkeling Hol Chan was the standout experience of the trip, offering coral reefs, nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, and unique stops like a sunken shipwreck, all accessible from Caye Caulker. A day trip to Ambergris Caye provided a useful comparison between the two islands, highlighting differences in pace, development, and atmosphere. Flying domestically in Belize became an unexpected highlight, with small prop planes, quick flight times, and a calm, efficient travel experience. Together, these guides and videos show what’s realistically possible in Belize while keeping the trip grounded, flexible, and unhurried.

This 5-day Belize itinerary shows how Caye Caulker works as an ideal base for exploring Belize while keeping a relaxed island pace. Using Caye Caulker as my hub, I combined world-class snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a scenic Great Blue Hole aerial tour, and a full day trip to Ambergris Caye.

Traveling by ferry and short domestic flights made it easy to island-hop without constantly changing hotels. The itinerary balances active days with slower moments spent walking the island, visiting the North Island, and enjoying the Caribbean Sea. Compared to busier Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker offered a calmer atmosphere while still providing access to Belize’s top highlights.

This guide breaks down each day so travelers can see what’s realistic in five days and decide if Caye Caulker is the right base for their Belize trip.

Snorkeling Hol Chan Marine Reserve was the highlight of my time in Belize and my first-ever snorkeling experience. Using Caye Caulker as my base, I joined a full-day snorkeling tour that made it easy to explore one of Belize’s most famous marine reserves without staying on Ambergris Caye.

Over the course of the day, I snorkeled coral reefs, swam near nurse sharks and stingrays at Shark Ray Alley, and spotted a sea turtle inside Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The tour also included unique stops like the Conch Shell Graveyard and a purposely sunken shipwreck, often called the “Belizean Titanic.” While we didn’t see manatees on this trip, we did spot dolphins from the boat while traveling between snorkel sites.

This guide shares exactly what the tour was like, how challenging it felt as a beginner, and whether snorkeling Hol Chan from Caye Caulker is worth it.

In this video, I share my first-ever snorkeling experience at Hol Chan Marine Reserve, one of Belize’s most well-known marine protected areas. Using Caye Caulker as my base, I joined a full-day snorkeling tour that included coral reefs, Shark Ray Alley, and several diverse snorkel sites. Throughout the day, I swam alongside nurse sharks and stingrays, spotted a sea turtle inside the reserve, and explored a purposely sunken shipwreck often referred to as the “Belizean Titanic.”

While we didn’t see manatees on this tour, we did spot dolphins from the boat while traveling between snorkel locations. This video shows what snorkeling Hol Chan is really like for beginners, including how challenging different stops can feel.

If you’re planning a trip to Belize and considering Caye Caulker as your base, this video offers a realistic look at whether snorkeling Hol Chan is worth adding to your itinerary.

Flying over the Great Blue Hole in Belize offers a perspective that’s impossible to fully appreciate from the surface. This firsthand account walks through my experience on an aerial tour with Maya Island Air, from departing the islands to circling the Blue Hole multiple times for photos and video.

With a 1–1 seating configuration, every passenger had a window seat, making it easy to capture unobstructed views of the iconic circular formation. The flight included four complete passes over the Great Blue Hole, giving both sides of the plane equal viewing opportunities. A low flyover of a nearby shipwreck added a second visual highlight to the experience.

With no narration or music, the flight felt calm and observational rather than rushed or commercial. For travelers who want to understand the scale and shape of the Great Blue Hole without diving, seeing it from the air is a memorable way to experience one of Belize’s most famous natural features.

Great Blue Hole Video Highlights

Flying over the Great Blue Hole in Belize offers a perspective that’s difficult to grasp from the surface. This video documents my full aerial experience, beginning with the flight setup and continuing through the approach, circling passes, and return to the islands.

The tour includes a repositioning flight to San Pedro before heading out over the reef toward the Great Blue Hole. Once there, the plane circles multiple times, giving both sides clear views from above. The footage shows the scale, shape, and color contrast of the Blue Hole as seen from the air. A low flyover of a nearby shipwreck is also included as part of the route.

This video focuses on showing what flying over the Great Blue Hole is really like, without exaggeration or unnecessary editing.

Using Caye Caulker as my base, I took a full-day trip to Ambergris Caye to see how the two islands compare. This guide walks through exactly how I got there, including flying to San Pedro and returning by ferry, along with the costs and differences between the two options.

Once on Ambergris Caye, I rented a golf cart and drove across the island to Secret Beach, passing mangroves and spotting a saltwater crocodile along the way. I also spent time walking around San Pedro to get a better sense of daily life beyond the main tourist areas.

While Ambergris Caye is more developed and spread out than Caye Caulker, it also felt more local and lived-in than expected. If you’re wondering whether Ambergris Caye is worth visiting without staying overnight, this day trip offers a realistic look at what you can experience in one day.

Flying domestically in Belize became one of my favorite parts of the trip, offering both convenience and unforgettable views from the air. Using Caye Caulker as my base, I took short island flights to Ambergris Caye, Belize City, and even an aerial tour to the Great Blue Hole.

Belize’s domestic flights operate on small prop planes, with relaxed boarding procedures, hand-delivered luggage, and flight times as short as five to ten minutes. Despite the size of the aircraft, the experience felt calm, organized, and surprisingly comfortable. Flying also provided stunning views of mangroves, reefs, and turquoise water that you simply can’t see from a ferry.

If you’re island hopping or short on time, domestic flights are an efficient and memorable way to travel around Belize. This guide explains exactly what to expect before booking your first flight.

Flying domestically in Belize can be surprisingly simple, and this short flight from Caye Caulker to Belize City is a great example. In this video, I show the entire Tropic Air flight in real time, from boarding on the tarmac to landing at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport.

The flight passes over smaller cayes, shallow reefs, and the Belize mainland before a westward approach into Belize City. There is no narration or music—only natural cabin sounds and pilot announcements.

I took the ferry to Caye Caulker but chose to fly back to the mainland, which made connecting to my international flight much easier. This video gives a realistic look at what flying domestically in Belize is actually like for travelers planning their logistics.

During my time in Belize, I took a day trip from Caye Caulker to Ambergris Caye to see how the two islands compared. I started the day with a short Tropic Air flight to San Pedro, rented a golf cart, and drove across the island to Secret Beach. Along the way, I passed mangroves, spotted a large saltwater crocodile, and got a better sense of how much bigger and more developed Ambergris Caye feels compared to Caye Caulker. After Secret Beach, I returned to San Pedro and explored the downtown area on foot before taking the ferry back in the evening.

This video gives a realistic look at what you can actually see in one day, including the costs, transportation choices, and how Ambergris Caye feels beyond the main tourist spots. If you are deciding whether Ambergris Caye is worth visiting without staying overnight, this is a good overview of what a self-guided day trip looks like.
