How to Walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein

Should You Visit Liechtenstein?

For anyone visiting Switzerland, I highly recommend a visit to the tiny nation of Liechtenstein. The best part about a visit to this tiny principality is that you can literally walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein.

During my Swiss vacation, I decided to spend a day walking around Liechtenstein’s capital city of Vaduz. After walking from Switzerland to Liechtenstein, I spent about four hours visiting some of Vaduz’s top tourist sights, including the Vaduz Castle, St. Florin Cathedral, and the Red House.

You can read more about my four hours in Liechtenstein by clicking HERE, as this page is only about how to walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein.

Why Should You Walk to Liechtenstein?

For visitors staying near the Switzerland/Liechtenstein border, it is actually quite easy to walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein as there are no immigration checkpoints for passport control or customs.

In addition to being easy, the walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein is very scenic and follows paths that are specially created for pedestrians.

Step by Step - Walking to Liechtenstein from Switzerland

Take the Train to Switzerland's Sevelen Station

During my visit to Switzerland/Liechtenstein, I stayed in the Swiss city of Bad Ragaz. The best starting point to walk from Liechtenstein to Switzerland is Sevelen Station. For Swiss Rail Pass holders, the journey to Sevelen Station is covered by the pass.

Take Rheinstrasse Street to the Old Rhine Bridge

Once at Sevelen Station, walk down the steps to Rheinstrasse Street. To walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein, follow Rheinstrasse Street all the way to the Switzerland/Liechtenstein border. There is one roundabout within a few hundred yards of the train station, so be sure to stay on Rheinstrasse Street when walking around the roundabout.

The view is very scenic, taking you by many Swiss farms. There is a lane next to the road that is dedicated to pedestrians and bikers. It took around thirty minutes to walk from Sevelen Station to the Switzerland/Liechtenstein border.

Just before the border, you will walk over Highway 13. Continue past the highway and take the steps down to the bank of the Rhine River.

It is important to take the path down to the banks of the Rhine River and not cross the bridge as it is designed for motorized traffic only. After walking down the path, you will be able to see the Old Rhine Bridge, which is designed for bicycle and foot traffic. This bridge will be your best route for walking from Switzerland to Liechtenstein.

The final step to walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein is to cross the Old Rhine Bridge. This bridge will be visible as soon as you get to the banks of the Rhine River.

The Old Rhine Bridge is only for pedestrians and cyclists. During my trek across the bridge, I did see one person on horseback as well.

Halfway across the bridge is the official Switzerland/Liechtenstein border. As stated before, there is no immigration, passport control, or customs. Anyone who is in Switzerland is allowed to visit Liechtenstein without any additional requirements. I highly recommend verifying these requirements before your visit, as entrance requirements can change.

Liechtenstein Tours and Packages

I chose to walk to Liechtenstein from Switzerland as I was already near the border and thought it would be a great way to see some additional scenery. When I arrived in Liechtenstein, I did not have a tour guide and did not feel like a guide was necessary. I do realize that some people like to be led around by a local and would prefer not to walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein. Below are a few packages that could enhance your visit. Please note that as an affiliate of Viator, I will receive a small commission if you purchase a tour or package using one of my links. This commission is at no additional cost to you.
