Walking from Switzerland to Liechtenstein - Map and Route

It is easy to walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein using the Old Rhine Bridge between Sevelen and Vaduz. This Switzerland to Vaduz route is simple, scenic, and easy to follow. Although I actually walked this route in reverse, I organized this guide from Switzerland to Liechtenstein because that is the version most people are more likely to search for.

If you want sightseeing ideas after the walk, read my separate guide to visiting Vaduz, Liechtenstein’s capital.

Why Walk to Liechtenstein?

For visitors staying near the Switzerland/Liechtenstein border, it is actually quite easy to walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein. Because Switzerland and Liechtenstein are both in the Schengen Area, there are generally no routine border checks here, though travelers should still carry valid travel documents and verify current entry requirements before traveling.

In addition to being easy, the walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein is very scenic and follows paths that are specially created for pedestrians. This route may also be somewhat seasonal. In winter, snow, ice, and colder conditions could make the walk less appealing or require more caution. My experience reflects the conditions at the time of my visit, so always check the weather before setting out.

Step by Step - Walking to Liechtenstein from Switzerland

Take the Train to Sevelen Station

During my visit to the Switzerland/Liechtenstein border, I stayed in the Swiss city of Bad Ragaz. The best starting point to walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein is Sevelen Station. For Swiss Travel Pass holders, the journey to Sevelen Station is covered by the pass.

While I completed this route in reverse, the directions below are written from Sevelen Station in Switzerland to Vaduz in Liechtenstein because that is the more common route people search for online. For many travelers, this is an easy Switzerland to Liechtenstein train and walking combination.

Walk from Sevelen Station to the Old Rhine Bridge

Once at Sevelen Station, walk down the steps to Rheinstrasse Street. To walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein, follow Rheinstrasse Street all the way to the Switzerland/Liechtenstein border. There is one roundabout within a few hundred yards of the train station, so be sure to stay on Rheinstrasse Street when walking around the roundabout.

The view is very scenic, taking you by many Swiss farms, and there is a lane next to the road that is dedicated to pedestrians and bikers. It took around thirty minutes to walk from Sevelen Station to the Switzerland/Liechtenstein border.

Just before the border, you will walk over Highway 13. Continue past the highway and take the steps down to the bank of the Rhine River.

It is important to take the path down to the banks of the Rhine River and not cross the automobile bridge, as it is designed for motorized traffic only. After walking down the path, you will be able to see the Old Rhine Bridge, which is designed for bicycle and foot traffic. This bridge is the best route for walking from Switzerland to Liechtenstein.

Below, the photo on the left shows the Swiss side of the automobile bridge. The path that you will want to take is the paved path on the far right side of that photo. The photo on the right shows the Liechtenstein side of the automobile bridge. Do not walk across this bridge, as it is only meant for cars.

Cross the Old Rhine Bridge

The final step to walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein is to cross the Old Rhine Bridge. This bridge will be visible as soon as you get to the banks of the Rhine River.

The Old Rhine Bridge is reserved for non-motorized traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists. During my trek across the bridge, I did see one person on horseback as well.

Halfway across the bridge is the official Switzerland/Liechtenstein border. As stated before, there are generally no routine border checks here. I highly recommend verifying current entry requirements before your visit, as border and travel rules can change.

Continue into Vaduz

From the Old Rhine Bridge, take the roundabout and locate Zollstrasse Street. Zollstrasse Street will take you into the Liechtenstein capital of Vaduz. It takes about twenty minutes to walk from the bridge to St. Florin Cathedral.

Once at St. Florin Cathedral, you will be within a short walk of many of Vaduz’s main tourist sights.

Liechtenstein Tours and Packages

I chose to walk to Liechtenstein from Switzerland because I was already near the border and thought it would be a great way to see some additional scenery. When I arrived in Liechtenstein, I did not have a tour guide and did not feel like a guide was necessary. I do realize that some people like to be led around by a local and would prefer not to walk from Switzerland to Liechtenstein. Below are a few packages that could enhance your visit. Please note that as an affiliate of Viator, I will receive a small commission if you purchase a tour or package using one of my links. This commission is at no additional cost to you.
