The Fjellheisen Cable Car

Getting to the Fjellheisen Cable Car

One of the activities I was most looking forward to in Tromsø, Norway, was taking the Fjellheisen Cable Car to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. I was told that the Fjellheisen Cable Car would have the best views in Tromsø, Norway. After walking from Tromsø City across the Tromsø bridge, I set out to find the Fjellheisen Cable Car. From my hotel, in Tromsø City, it was about an hour’s walk with stops for pictures and to check my map. The cable car can also be reached by taxi and is a stop for various Tromsø City tours.

The Fjellheisen Cable Car is easily accessible by taxi, but I chose to walk to experience as much of the Arctic as possible. The end of the walk takes you through a residential area, and you must go up a hill to get to the cable car’s departure point.

Fjellheisen Cable Car Ticket Prices and Riding to the Top

I had two questions when I arrived at the Fjellheisen Cable Car. The first one was how much does it cost to take the Fjellheisen Cable Car to the top of the mountain? That question was easily answered as it costs kr260 (USD27) for a roundtrip ticket.

My second question was, how long does it take to ride the Fjellheisen Cable Car to the top of the mountain? I was told the Cable Car takes about 4 minutes to travel 421 meters to the observation point.

I had read about how people purchase a one-way ticket and then walk down in the summer. The cost of a one-way ticket is kr190 (USD20). Since it was winter, I chose the round trip option as a walk down the side of the mountain looked extremely dangerous.

Upon arrival, I explored at my leisure.  Some people had the ambitious goal of climbing much higher through the mountains.  The Cable Car operator discouraged this as there was a “Red Alert” for avalanches.

There were no paths to follow and walking was somewhat tricky.  The strenuous task of attempting to walk through the snow was well worth it as I witnessed the best views of Tromsø City and the surrounding area.

I also got to experience a brief Arctic Storm blowing in.  The storm brought high winds and some blowing snow.  These storms were a common occurrence during my short stay in Tromsø.  During the snow storm, I went into the lounge and connected to the free WIFI.  It took about 45 minutes to ride out the storm and during that time I was able to upload and edit many of my pictures.  In addition, I was super surprised that there was strong cell phone service at the top of the mountain.

I spent a few hours at the top although I could have spent an entire day.  After taking many pictures, I made my return trip down to the bottom and walked back to my hotel.  I needed to rest up as that night I would be going on a Northern Lights Chase.
