The Fjellheisen Cable Car

Getting to the Fjellheisen Cable Car

One of the must-do activities in Tromsø, Norway, is taking the Fjellheisen Cable Car to the mountain ledge, Storsteinen. Known for providing the best views in Tromsø, the cable car ride is a favorite for tourists seeking to take in the beauty of the Arctic. I decided to walk from Tromsø City, crossing the iconic Tromsø Bridge, and making my way to the Fjellheisen Cable Car. The walk from my hotel in Tromsø City took about an hour, with stops to take pictures and check my map.

For those who prefer not to walk, the Fjellheisen Cable Car is easily accessible by taxi, or as a stop on many Tromsø City tours. The last part of the walk takes you through a residential area, with a slight uphill climb to the cable car’s base station.

Fjellheisen Cable Car Ticket Prices and Ride Details

When I arrived, I had two main questions:

  1. How much does it cost to ride the Fjellheisen Cable Car?

    • A round-trip ticket costs kr495 (about USD 45).
    • A one-way ticket is kr320 (around USD 29) — a popular option in the summer for those who wish to hike down the mountain.
  2. How long is the ride to the top?

    • The cable car journey takes around 4 minutes, covering a distance of 421 meters to the observation point.

Since it was winter, I opted for the round-trip ticket as hiking down in icy conditions looked too risky.

Stunning Views from the Top of the Fjellheisen Cable Car

Upon reaching the summit, I took my time exploring the surroundings. Some adventurous visitors continued hiking further up the mountains, despite the Red Alert warning for avalanches.

Walking through the deep snow was challenging, but it was worth it for the spectacular views.

Arctic Weather and Facilities at the Fjellheisen Cable Car

While at the top, I experienced a brief but intense Arctic storm, which brought strong winds and blowing snow. These Arctic storms are not uncommon in Tromsø, and I sought refuge in the mountain lodge during the storm. Inside, I took advantage of the free WiFi to upload and edit photos. Despite the remote location, cell phone service remained strong.

I spent several hours enjoying the views, taking photographs, and exploring the area. Eventually, I took the cable car back down and walked back to my hotel, preparing for my evening Northern Lights tour.
