Oslo to Tromsø on SAS Airlines - About My Trip
Flights direct from Minneapolis to Tromsø were well over $2000 and required many layovers and airline switches. I realized that the easiest way to get to Tromsø was to first get to Europe and then worry about how to get to Tromsø. I hit the jackpot with a $500 flight to Amsterdam with a brief connection in London on American Airlines. Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities and a chance to stay there for a day on either end was a bonus.
To get from Amsterdam to Tromsø I found it was cheaper to book two one way trips. My flight to Tromsø was on SAS with a connection in Oslo and was a bargain at $170. The fare I purchased included a seat assignment and a checked bag. The flight to Oslo was on an Airbus A320, and I selected my usual narrow body seat in an exit row aisle. My entire exit row was empty on the flight to Oslo which made it possible to stretch out and relax. Upon landing in Oslo snow was visible and I was excited to see what it would be like in the Arctic.

Connecting in Oslo - Oslo to Tromsø on SAS Airlines
The Oslo airport was one of the nicest airports I’d ever flown into. It was made of Alpine Style wood and appeared more like a resort than an airport. There was plenty of room at each gate and an abundance of comfortable spots to sit.
The only issue was clearing customs to get from International Arrivals to Domestic Departures. Norway is a member of the Schengen Area but is not a member of the EU. Because of this, before I was able to leave International Arrivals, I had to wait for my name to be listed on the “Cleared List” for TV monitors.
I didn’t have to claim my bag or even speak to anyone. I merely had to wait to see my name listed on the screen and then I was able to scan my ticket and get through the automated gate.
Once I arrived in the main hall, it was easy to find Domestic Departures, and I waited about 75 minutes for my flight to Tromsø.
Oslo to Tromsø - A Review of My Flight on SAS Airlines
My flight took off on time, and 2 hours later I had landed in the frozen Arctic of Tromsø, Norway. This time the plane was a Boeing 737-800, and I once again had my regular exit row aisle seat. The flight was full but there was still plenty of room in the exit row. It was after 10:00 P.M, and rather than take the express bus (Flybussen), I chose to take a taxi. The taxi driver was very friendly, and we discussed some of the things that he felt I must do and see. My taxi ride was roughly 200 Norwegian Krone and with the tip came out to about $30.
My Return Flight - Tromsø to Oslo on Norwegian Airlines
My return flight took off very early, and I chose to take the Flybussen. I caught the first bus which picked me up outside my hotel only 90 minutes before my flight. Tickets were purchased on the bus for 100 NOK ($12). I arrived at the airport 60 minutes before my flight quite nervous. The receptionist at the front desk of my hotel had assured me that this would be plenty of time. She explained that the bus company knows when the flights depart. My flight was the first flight of the day.
Check in at Tromsø Airport is fully automated. You enter your confirmation, scan your passport, print your boarding pass and luggage tag, tag your bag, proceed to the bag drop, scan your bag, place it on the conveyer belt, and then go through security. I didn’t encounter an employee until the security check. I was also thrilled that there was no one checking bags because my bag was about 3 KG overweight.
Both my flight to Oslo and to Amsterdam were on time, and there were no issues. I had a great experience with both SAS and Norwegian and would fly them both again.
