Getting to Amsterdam
Why Schiphol Airport
Amsterdam’s Schiphol has been my “go to” destination for cheap flights to Europe. I have used Schiphol twice to fly into Europe as it often has airfares for under $500.
Schiphol Airport is the reason I fly into Amsterdam. It is one of the most efficient airports in the world, and I cleared immigration both times within 10 minutes of getting in line. On each of my two trips, my luggage was waiting for me upon arrival. Getting through customs is even easier as all I had to do was walk through the “nothing to declare” line.
Schiphol Airport has its own train station with trains every 10-15 minutes to Amsterdam’s Central Station. My first visit I stayed in the city center of Amsterdam during the inbound portion of my trip and then at the airport during the outbound portion of my journey. It was during that trip that I found the best thing about Schiphol Airport, the CitizenM Hotel.
The CitizenM hotel is just outside the Schiphol Train Station. From the baggage claim, it is less than a 5-minute walk to the hotel. During my second trip, I stayed at the CitizenM the entire time and took the train into the City Center of Amsterdam to walk around and take in some sights. This hotel was especially valuable because I had a 7:00 am flight the next day. Due to being within a 5-minute walk of the check-in area I was able to sleep much later than if I had been staying in the city center.
Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport is indeed the easiest way to get access to Europe. It helps that Amsterdam is also one of the best cities in Europe to walk around and following the many canals offer hours of free entertainment. With 100s of daily flights to all the major European Destinations, it is easy to get anywhere in Europe within a few hours.

Delta Airlines Flight
Amsterdam’s Schiphol has been my “go to” destination for cheap flights to Europe. I have used Schiphol twice to fly into Europe as it often has airfares for under $500.
My first experience with Schiphol was in April 2017 when I flew from Minneapolis to Amsterdam with a stopover in Detroit. The cost for that flight was $499 round trip including taxes. After spending a few days walking around Amsterdam, I then flew to Rome to experience the history of Italy. Had I flown directly to Rome the flight would have cost over $1200. Going to Amsterdam first not only allowed me a bonus destination but also saved much money.
My second trip was in March of 2018. I had my eyes on Tromsø, Norway but the cost to fly from Chicago to Tromsø was in the $1500 range. Once again, Amsterdam had an incredible airfare deal for just over $500. This time my flight was on American which had a stopover in London. The London to Amsterdam leg was on British Airlines.
At the time, I did not know that I would be starting a travel website so I don’t have specific pictures of the flight amenities. My flight Delta flight was on an A330-200 which features a 2-4-2 seating arrangement. I was able to secure a bulkhead seat without any additional fees, and I did not have any complaints about my flight.
American Airlines Flight
My American Airlines flight the following year was on a Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner. American crams the seats in a 3-4-3 seating arrangement which felt very tight. Other airlines keep their Dreamliners in a 3-3-3 seating arrangement.
Although the flight on American itself was excellent we had a few issues before takeoff. They could not get the luggage door to latch, and it caused a 2-hour delay. The delay meant I missed my connecting flight and didn’t get to Amsterdam until 6 hours later than expected. It was disappointing as I had limited time in Amsterdam before I continued onto Tromsø, Norway the next day. To make up for my troubles, I was given a $100 voucher.
