Old Town Dubrovnik

The Walls of Old Town Dubrovnik

Old Town was the highlight of my visit to Dubrovnik and is Dubrovnik’s main attraction.  To enter Old Town Dubrovnik, visitors must go inside the walls. In the previous post, I highlighted walking the walls.  This section is dedicated to the area of Old Town inside the walls.

Old Town is free to enter and is open 24 hours.  There are multiple entrance gates. I chose to begin using the Pile Gate as it was closest to my hotel.  The Pile Gate is lit up at night, and there are orange trees all around. There is also a great view of the Adriatic and Fort Lovrijenac from the Pile Gate.

Onofrio's Fountain - Inside the City Walls of Old Town Dubrovnik

Upon entering the Old Town, I stopped to look at Onofrio’s Fountain.  The water coming out of Onofrio’s Fountain is drinking water although I did not drink any.  Next to Onofrio’s fountain is St. Savior Church. A clear glass door allows visitors to look into the church even when it is closed.

Placa Stradun - The Main Street Inside the City Walls of Old Town Dubrovnik

The main street inside Old Town Dubrovnik is Placa Stradun.  Placa Stradun features a mix of historic buildings, retail shops, and street vendors.  There are additional streets that connect to Placa Stradun. Most of those streets have other shopping options.  Walking the inner streets of Old Town can be slightly confusing, and I found myself getting lost multiple times.

During the holiday season, there were many Christmas decorations including the Festive Teddy Bear displayed below.  Old Town was in the process of being set up for a New Years Eve Party during my visit.

St. Blaise Church - Inside the City Walls of Old Town Dubrovnik

One of the major attractions of the Old Town is St. Blaise Church.  The Church is located at the end of Placa Stradun, and I was able to go inside.  There was no one inside, so I was able to take my time looking around and taking pictures.  In front of St. Blaise Church is Orlando’s Column. Orlando’s Column was built in the 9th as a tribute to Orlando.  Orlando, also known as Rolando was credited with saving Dubrovnik from a siege.

The Clock Tower - Inside the City Walls of Old Town Dubrovnik

Another major attraction is the Clock Tower which is located at the end of Placa Stradun.  The Clock Towers’ bells toll every hour and can be heard throughout all of Old Town. It was difficult to get a good shot of the clock tower as the New Years Eve stage had been placed right in front of it..

Dubrovnik Harbor

One of the most picturesque portions of the Old Town is Dubrovnik Harbor.  Technically, the harbor is located outside of the city walls, but it connects Dubrovnik to the rest of Croatia via the Adriatic Sea.  Dubrovnik is cut off from the rest of Croatia as it is not possible

Christmas Decorations Inside the City Walls of Old Town Dubrovnik

As stated earlier, Old Town was decorated with many Christmas decorations.  These included Christmas Trees, Angels, candles, and Christmas Wreaths. Even the statue of famous Croatian Renaissance Play Write Marin Drzic had decorations around it.

Dinner Inside the City Walls of Old Town Dubrovnik

There are many restaurants located in Old Town Dubrovnik.  With temperatures in the mid-40s, at night, I chose to eat outside at the St. Blaise Konoba.  After having some delicious Croatian bread, I ate Mediterranean Style Chicken with fries and Mediterranean Vegetables.  It was terrific although the portion was smaller than I expected.
