Are the Salzburg Christmas Markets Worth Visiting?
There is so much to do in Salzburg, Austria, from walking around historic Old Town, to visiting the Fortress Hohensalzburg, and taking a cable car into the beautiful mountains. One attraction that is often overlooked during the winter season is the Salzburg Christmas Markets. The Salzburg Christmas Markets are definitely worth visiting, and tourists can spend anywhere from a few minutes to many hours looking for holiday decorations and delicious treats.
The Salzburg Christmas Markets are from late November until January 1. In 2024, the Christmas Markets opened on November 21 and closed for the final time on January 1.

Where are the Salzburg Christmas Markets Located?
The Salzburg Christmas Markets are located in an area known as Residenzplatz, which is located near the arches of the Salzburg Cathedral and the entrance to DomQuartier Salzburg.
The markets wind around the Salzburg Cathedral and end near the Sphaera (Gold Ball). At Mozartplatz, there is a skating rink where people can ice skate.
The Salzburg Christmas Markets typically open between 9:00 and 10:00 am and close between 8:30 and 9:00 pm.
What is there to buy at the Salzburg Christmas Markets?
Visitors can buy a variety of items at the Salzburg Christmas Markets. The most common items are Christmas and holiday decorations. Pictured below are beautiful Christmas Houses and figurines that were for sale at one of the Salzburg Christmas Market kiosks.
Another popular Christmas decoration was the nutcrackers. There were multiple kiosks selling nutcrackers at the Salzburg Christmas Markets.
In addition to holiday decorations, there was a variety of chocolates, candies, and sweets being sold at the Salzburg Christmas Markets.
I did not make any purchases during my time walking through the Salzburg Christmas Markets. Despite coming home empty-handed, I thoroughly enjoyed walking through the Christmas Markets and looking at the beautiful decorations and delicious candy.
