What to do in Odaiba? An Introduction to the Artificial Island of Odaiba
Odaiba is an Artificial Island
The first tourist destination I visited during my initial trip to Tokyo in 2018 was the artificial island of Odaiba. Before my visit, I researched what to do in Odaiba and discovered that Odaiba is famous for its remarkable architecture and vibrant atmosphere. Originally constructed in the 1850s for defensive purposes, Odaiba is now one of Tokyo’s leading commercial, residential, and leisure districts. The island is filled with shopping malls, theme parks, and museums.
When I returned in March 2025, I explored the Odaiba area once again, this time in the evening. Although I was disappointed that the Venus Fort Mall had permanently closed, I found that there’s still plenty to see and experience in Odaiba.
How to Get to Odaiba
Getting to Odaiba from central Tokyo is straightforward. First, I took the Yamanote Line to Shimbashi Station, a journey included with my JR Rail Pass. At Shimbashi Station, I transferred to the Yurikamome Line, a scenic train that crosses the iconic Rainbow Bridge and offers stunning views. The Yurikamome Line is not covered by the JR Rail Pass. Instead I used my Suica Card by simply tapping it at the station gate.
There are several stations in Odaiba, but I chose Kokusai-Tenjijo-Seimon Station, one of the final stops, to begin exploring.

Tokyo Big Sight: A Convention Center Giant
Upon arrival, my first stop among the many things to do in Odaiba was visiting Tokyo Big Sight. This striking, gravity-defying building serves as Tokyo’s primary convention center and exhibition hall. Due to long entry lines, I opted to photograph the impressive exterior from afar before continuing on foot to my next destination, the Telecom Center.
The Hole in Odaiba's Heart: The Telecom Center
The Telecom Center is another notable structure in Odaiba, serving as a telecommunications hub. Its unique feature is a giant hole through the center, symbolizing openness and global communication. Although the 21st-floor observation deck is renowned for panoramic views, I chose to skip it since I’d planned a nighttime visit to the Tokyo Sky Tree later.
Continuing to Explore Odaiba - The Fuji TV Studios
Continuing my exploration, I visited the Fuji TV Studios, one of Odaiba’s most architecturally distinctive buildings, situated by Odaiba Harbor with fantastic views of the Rainbow Bridge.
The design of Fuji TV Studios is open to interpretation. Some visitors see a representation of an old television set’s interior, others perceive a vision of advanced technology, and a few even liken its sphere to a giant eyeball or spaceship. Although I didn’t settle on an interpretation, photographing this architectural landmark was certainly worthwhile.
The Odaiba Marine Park - Great Views of the Rainbow Bridge
Walking towards the Yurikamome Line afterward, I discovered Odaiba Marine Park, a waterfront park offering excellent views of the iconic Rainbow Bridge. With large anchors and chains embedded along the shoreline, the park provided an interesting backdrop for photography.
After capturing some memorable images, I boarded the Yurikamome Train back to Shimbashi Station. Within minutes, I was back at my hotel preparing for an evening at the Tokyo Sky Tree. For visitors wondering what to do in Odaiba, this artificial island can easily be explored in just a few hours.
Best Night View of Tokyo’s Skyline
In March 2025, I revisited Odaiba in the evening, arriving at Daiba Station via the Yurikamome Line. From there, I walked to Odaiba Marine Park, where I captured stunning nighttime photographs of the Tokyo skyline. Highlights included illuminated views of the Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Sky Tree, and Tokyo Tower. Visiting Odaiba at night offers spectacular opportunities for photographers and sightseers alike.
