Hiroshima was one of the places I was most looking forward to visiting. As a Global Studies teacher, I wanted to see first hand one of the most somber places in the world; the location where the first atomic bomb was dropped. After looking for many accommodations in the Hiroshima Area, I chose the Hiroshima Tokyu REI Hotel. This hotel was located in between the Peace Memorial Park, which was the site of the impact zone of the atomic bomb, and Hiroshima Station. I thought this was a good choice due to its low price of $65 per night.
The Hiroshima Tokyu REI Hotel itself had very few frills. To access the lobby, I had to enter a ground level entrance and go to a set of elevators. The elevators stopped at the second floor which is where the lobby was. After checking in, I went up to my room which was on the 9th floor.

Tokyu REI Hotel - The Room
My room at the Hiroshima Tokyu REI Hotel was very basic. The bed was tiny and not overly comfortable, and there was barely enough space to open my suitcase. The only amenities were a little tv, a tiny desk, and a smart toilet which was similar to all of the toilets in Japanese hotels.
Even though the room had few thrills, the location easily made up for the lack of amenities. I was able to see everything that I wanted to in Hiroshima without taking the train. The only exception was Miyajima Island, which required a train ride and a boat trip.
For a budget traveler, this hotel was fine. Just be sure that you know what you are getting. It is similar to any European or American budget hotel. My biggest complaint was that my feet hung over the edge of the bed by almost a foot and the elevator always stopped at the second floor for “security reasons.”
