Many airlines fly from Taipei to Tokyo. At first, I considered discount airlines such as Vanilla Air, Tiger Air, or Scoot but found that by the time I checked my bag, paid an extra fee for my bag to be 27 kg (51 lbs), and selected my seat it would cost as much as a flight on Eva Air, the flagship airline of Taiwan. I booked my Eva Air A330-300 flight from Taipei to Tokyo and then returning to Taipei from Osaka. I would be taking the Shinkansen all around Japan and figured it would be easier to fly out of Osaka than Tokyo. My airfare wasn’t cheap at $480, but it will still better than flying one of the Asian versions of Spirit Airlines.

Checking In and Eating at Taipei Taoyuan Airport
Check-in at Taipei Taoyuan Airport was fairly routine. I first checked in at an electronic check-in station and then took my bag to the bag drop. The only significant difference is that I had to wait for my bag to clear a customs inspection x-ray before I could go onto security.
The security checkpoint was routine as well. I made it through with no trouble and then had to wait for about 20 minutes to receive my Taiwan exit stamp.
I then stopped to eat an airport meal of beef and noodle soup and found my gate. By this time we were already boarding. The boarding process is by zone, and my zone was already boarding. Thankfully, there was plenty of overhead space for my backpack.

I found my seat 42 G on the Eva Air A330-300 aircraft. The interior of the plane was extremely clean and well kept; as the boarding process continued, I observed the flight attendants cleaning the lavatory and some of the overhead compartments.
The plane took off on time, and within the first thirty minutes, the flight attendants began the meal service. We were given a choice of fish or pork curry. Not being a seafood eater, I chose the pork curry. The pork curry was served with a salad, warm roll, fruit (watermelon, apple, pineapple), rice, and a vegetable. This meal was, without a doubt, the best airplane meal I had ever had.
After eating, I spent some time working on this website using the Eva Air Internet. Onboard the Eva Air A330-300, the Internet cost $19 for 3 hours and was pretty fast for airplane Wifi.
After 2 hours, 58 minutes in the air, we landed at Tokyo Narita Airport. Clearing passport control and customs was reasonably easy. The customs agent was very friendly and were interested in the details of my trip.

I then activated my JR Rail Pass (see Getting Around Japan) and set off to Tokyo Station on the Narita Express. The journey took 40 minutes round trip, and I had first-class accommodations on the Green Car. I arrived at Tokyo Station and then walked the .4 miles to my hotel.
