Where Was Jesus Christ Baptized on the Jordan River? (Qasr al-Yahud & Bethany Beyond the Jordan)

While no one for sure knows the exact place where Jesus Christ was baptized in the Jordan River, there is a site that is widely recognized by many churches and historians as the location of Jesus’ baptism. According to the Bible, John 1:28 states, “These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan where John [the Baptist] was baptizing.”

Today, the main traditional baptism site of Jesus is marked on the eastern (Jordanian) bank at the Baptism Site “Bethany beyond the Jordan” (Al-Maghtas), a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the western side of the river, opposite Al-Maghtas near Jericho, is Qasr al-Yahud, the West Bank section of this traditional Jordan River baptism site, and this is the location I visited on my tour.

Video Highlights from Qasr al-Yahud Baptism Site

In this video, I visit Qasr al-Yahud, the traditional western-bank baptism site of Jesus Christ on the Jordan River, opposite Bethany beyond the Jordan (Al-Maghtas) in Jordan. You’ll see how narrow the Jordan River is at this point, the concrete steps leading down to the water, and Christian pilgrims dressed in white robes preparing to be baptized in the Jordan River. I film the view across to the churches and flags on the Jordanian side, giving a sense of how closely connected the two traditional baptism sites are. The video focuses on what it feels like to stand at this important Christian pilgrimage site, watch modern baptisms taking place, and reflect on the New Testament description of Bethany beyond the Jordan in John 1:28. If you’re planning a visit to the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, this video offers a clear, on-the-ground look at what you’ll experience at Qasr al-Yahud.

Biblical Background: The Baptism of Jesus Christ

The baptism of Jesus Christ marked the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. It is also a time when he is recognized by God as his beloved Son. The baptism is described in the New Testament by Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and referred to in the Gospel of John through John the Baptist’s testimony. Today, it is remembered at both Qasr al-Yahud and Bethany beyond the Jordan (Al-Maghtas).

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus comes to his cousin John the Baptist at the Jordan River and asks to be baptized. John is not sure if he is worthy to baptize Jesus. However, Jesus insists, and John agrees. As Jesus is being baptized, a voice from heaven speaks, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)

How to Visit Qasr al-Yahud from Jerusalem

The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ that I visited is Qasr al-Yahud, a Jordan River baptism site in the Jordan Valley near Jericho, in the West Bank. This stretch of the river sits directly across from the Jordanian Baptism Site “Bethany beyond the Jordan” (Al-Maghtas), which many Christian traditions recognize as the most likely historical location of Jesus Christ’s baptism.

It takes around an hour and fifteen minutes to reach the Qasr al-Yahud baptism site from Jerusalem, depending on traffic and road conditions. In my opinion, the easiest way to visit the Baptism Site is to take a guided day tour from Jerusalem. I chose to tour the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ with the tour company Elijah Tours. This tour stopped at three locations: BethlehemJericho, and the Baptism Site on the Jordan River.

Because this region is politically sensitive, visitors should always check current travel advisories and follow the guidance of their tour operator. Bethlehem and Jericho are in Palestinian Authority–administered areas, where there are Israeli legal restrictions on entry for Israeli citizens, while Qasr al-Yahud itself is in the West Bank but managed by Israeli authorities as a designated Christian pilgrimage site. Tour companies will normally explain where you can go and what documents you need to carry when visiting holy sites in the West Bank.

What It’s Like at the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ Today

We spent about thirty minutes visiting the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ at Qasr al-Yahud. Upon arrival, it was a short walk from the parking lot to the Jordan River along a clearly marked path.

The part of the Jordan River near the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ is very narrow. Across the river is the country of Jordan, where the Bethany beyond the Jordan (Al-Maghtas) site and churches are located. Standing at Qasr al-Yahud, you can easily see visitors and pilgrims on the opposite bank.

For those interested in being baptized in the Jordan River, white gowns can be purchased or rented at the gift shop. Two members of our tour group were baptized in the same traditional location as Jesus Christ, along this symbolic stretch of the Jordan River baptism site.

The Jordan River has been plagued by overuse and is just a trickle of its natural historical flow due to modern water diversion and overuse. The photo below shows how much the water level has dropped in the last ten years.

Tours That Visit Qasr al-Yahud and Bethany Beyond the Jordan

In my opinion, the easiest way to see the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ at Qasr al-Yahud is to take a tour. I have linked a few Holy Land tours below that stop at the Jordan River baptism site, often combining Bethlehem, Jericho, and the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ into a single day trip from Jerusalem. These tours are a convenient way to see several important Christian holy sites in one itinerary.
