Walking Across the Tromsø Bridge
Can You Walk Across the Tromsø Bridge
The Tromsø Bridge is one of the most recognized sights in Tromsø. The 3,399-foot (1,036 meters) long bridge crosses the Tromsøysundet Strait connecting the mainland to the island of Tromsøya. When it opened in 1960, the Tromsø Bridge was the first cantilever bridge in all of Norway. In addition to being used for vehicles, it is possible to walk across the Tromsø Bridge.
Today, the Tromsø Bridge is not the only way to get from the mainland to Tromsøya. In 1994, the Tromsøysund Tunnel opened, allowing motorists to either take the bridge or the new underground tunnel. The opening of the tunnel helped with congestion on the bridge.
In addition to walking across the Tromsø Bridge, I highly recommend viewing it from the observation point at the top of the Fjellheisen Cable Car.

How to Walk Across the Tromsø Bridge
One of my first activities in Tromsø was to walk across the Tromsø Bridge on my way to the Fjellheisen Cable Car. At a length of 3,399 feet long, the Tromsø Bridge is easy to walk across. The bridge has a bike path on the north side and a walking path on the south side. If crossing the bridge on foot, make sure you are walking on the south side of the bridge.
The center of the bridge offered a great view of the City of Tromsø as well as the Tromsø Harbor. I often stopped for pictures, but I believe the entire bridge crossing by foot took me less than 20 minutes. Throughout my walk, I encountered a few other tourists. On the other side of the bridge, despite being winter, there was a surprisingly large number of people riding bicycles.
The walk was not very strenuous, although the bridge was slippery. A few times, I did have to grab onto the handrail to make sure that I did not fall.
In Tromsø, during the winter, it snows almost daily (at least it did when I was there.) On my way back, I saw them plowing the sidewalk. It seemed that they try to keep the pedestrian path accessible at all times.
Towards the end of the bridge crossing, there is a great photo opportunity to take pictures of Tromsø’s Arctic Cathedral and the coastline of the mainland.
After walking across the Tromsø Bridge, and taking a few more pictures of the Arctic Cathedral, I set off on a walk of around 1 mile to the Fjellheisen Cable Car to get a bird’s eye view of Tromsø City.
