The Rest of Tromsø – Exploring the City
The Rest of Tromsø - Exploring the City
This section, entitled The Rest of Tromsø, covers some of the places that I thought were important to mention but couldn’t figure out where to fit them into my other pages. Many of these places are not the main tourist attractions of Tromsø but are places that I thought were worth visiting. I hope this page helps you learn a little bit more about some non-touristy things to do in Tromsø.

Storgata Street - Tromsø, Norway's Main Street
Storgata street is the main pedestrian street in Tromsø and is packed with restaurants, cafes, and souvenir/specialty shops. It is an excellent place to start if you are exploring Tromsø by foot or have a few hours to kill in between tours. I highly recommend walking through the shops and making a few purchases to bring home. In addition to supporting the local economy, there are some beautiful items and gifts available. Also, there are some really great restaurants and cafes on Storgata Street. While I didn’t visit many of them because I was typically on tours, I did have a really good pizza.
While some parts of Storgata Street have heated sidewalks that melt the snow, I found that boots were necessary at all times in Tromsø.
The Coop Prix is a convenience store that had excellent snacks and quick meals. Not wanting to spend much time waiting in restaurants it is where I ate many my meals. Also, notice the H&M on the left-hand side and the Tromsø Souvenir Shop on the right.
Tromsø Harbor is a short walk from Storgata Street. There are various shops and restaurants around as well as a few different hotels that are right on the water. I enjoyed taking pictures of the colorful buildings near the harbor. During cruise season, cruise ships are arriving and often departing from Tromsø Harbor. You can experience the harbor in less than an hour. I highly recommend you make some time to explore Tromsø Harbor.
One of the days I was in Tromsø a Hurtigruten Cruise Ship arrived. This company offers day tours as well as multi-day tours out of Tromsø. The ship wasn’t there long as it was gone the following morning.
Walking Around Tromsø
When walking around Tromsø there are all sorts of exciting and unique things to see. Be sure to watch out for trolls. I found these two on Storgata Street outside a local souvenir shop. Thankfully they were very friendly!
As far as the difficulty of walking, I had little issues walking through the snow. Just be sure to bring good boots and a waterproof outer layer. A warm winter coat is most important, but I would have been miserable without a waterproof raincoat to wear over it.
Google Maps worked well for me, and all of my destinations were easy to find. Tromsø is so compact that after a day or two I didn’t even need to use my map. If you don’t have international cellphone service most of the hotels provide paper maps and many of the businesses have free WIFI.
If you need to make a call, there are even some telephone booths like the one on the right. Just make sure you are prepared to dig to get the door open.
Driving Around Tromsø
I chose not to rent a car and instead opted for tours. I was worried about driving in the Arctic winter conditions and felt like I would have a better experience having a guide show me around. If you do rent a car, all cars in Tromsø are required to have special studded snow tires. Getting from Tromsø Island to the other islands is easy. There are multiple bridges and underground tunnels connecting the islands. The biggest downside of renting a car would be the cost of fuel. Gasoline was Kr15.78 per liter during my trip, which comes out kr 59.72 per gallon or $7.30 per gallon.
Tours that Depart from Tromsø
There are so many wonderful tours that depart from Tromsø City. Some of these tours include whale watching, northern lights, dog sledding, snowshoeing, fishing, fjord cruises, and more. Even if every one of your days in Tromsø is filled with tours, I highly recommend a trip to the Fjellheisen Cable Car. I am an affiliate of Viator. If you book any of the tours below, I will receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. I would greatly appreciate it if you would consider booking with one of my links.
