During my visit to Sydney, Australia, I decided to stay right next to Sydney Harbour. I never would have though that I would have found the hotel with the best views of Sydney Harbour.
In looking for a hotel, I always take into consideration price and location. I try to pay under USD$100 per night and want to be close to the top tourist sights and public transportation. For my three nights in Sydney, I chose the Shangri La Hotel Sydney, which came in at just over $680. Since this was slightly higher than my typical room budget, I decided to use my Chase Sapphire Preferred rewards points to pay for my room.

Why I Chose Shangri La Hotel Sydney
I chose the Shangri La Hotel Sydney because of its excellent location. The hotel has 565 rooms and offers spectacular views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Shangri La Hotel is accessible through Wynyard Station or Circular Quay Station. Please note if you have luggage Wynyard Station is the best bet because the walk from Circular Quay is almost entirely uphill.
As you will read below, I never expected to be able to upgrade to a room that provided the best views of Sydney Harbour.
Check-In at Shangri La Hotel, Sydney
I arrived at Shangri La Hotel Sydney around 9:00 am local time. My initially booked room was not ready, and I was given a choice of waiting until 3:00 pm or paying for an upgrade. The receptionist said she could take down my telephone number and call me if my room became available earlier. The upgrade available was to an Executive Sydney King Harbour Room. I chose to upgrade at the cost of AUS$100 per night because I was exhausted from traveling all night and thought it would be nice to have a full habour view. I was told that my room would have one of the best views of Sydney Harbour, and that it would be a better view than any other hotel in the area could provide.
The Best View of Sydney Harbour - Shangri La Hotel, Sydney
The receptionist wasn’t kidding when she said this would be the best view of Sydney Harbour. Below are pictures from my hotel room window of Sydney Harbour. I used a tripod and pressed my lens up against the window to get these photos. From my room, I could see Sydney Harbour, the Harbour Bridge, the Oprah House, and more. For those interested, in this exact view, my room was 2611, which is on the 26th floor.
The Room - Executive Harbour View King Room - Shangri La Hotel, Sydney
The room itself was almost as spectacular as the view of Sydney Harbour. The king best was extremely comfortable, and there were wall controls next to the bed that controlled all of the lights in the room. There were plenty of places to sit and work, including two chairs, a circular table, and a desk/chair combination.
The bathroom had a bathtub and a shower and was fully stocked with toiletries including shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, a toothbrush, toothpaste, cotton swabs, and bar soap. In the shower, there was excellent water pressure and the water was nice and hot. Being a resident of the Northern Hemisphere, I was quite amused by the clockwise rotation of the draining water.
Conclusions - Shangri La Hotel Sydney
I give my top recommendation of the Shangri La Hotel Sydney. The positives of this property included a friendly and helpful staff, stunning view of Sydney Harbour, spacious room, and comfortable bed. The only negative is the walk up the hill was somewhat strenuous. Because of the uphill walk, I would not recommend this property to someone who has mobility issues.
