It is free to enter the Hallgrimskirkja Church, but to visit the observation deck of the Hallgrimskirkja Church it costs 1,000 ISK ($7.25).
Hallgrimskirkja is the largest church in Iceland, the tallest building in Reykjavik, and the second tallest building in Iceland. The Church was commissioned in 1937, but not completed until 1986. The design of the Hallgrímskirkja Church was meant to resemble the rocks, mountains, and glaciers of Iceland’s Landscape. Inside the church, there is a large pipe organ that has 5,275 pipes.

The Observation Deck of the Hallgrímskirkja Church
The observation deck is 74 meters tall and provides excellent views of Reykjavik and the Atlantic. There is an elevator that takes people up most of the way to the top, but the last few floors involve walking up some very steep and narrow steps. It was a reasonably easy climb, but as I went around the last corner, I definitely had to “think thin” and was worried they might have to call the Reykjavik Fire Brigade to free me. I made it to the top and took some beautiful pictures of the city.
Reykjavik City Tours
I know that most of the popular tourist sights in Iceland are outside the city limits of Reykjavik, but I highly recommend spending some time in the Reykjavik in between your tours. One of those stops should be the Hallgrímskirkja Church, and you do not need a tour to go to the top.
