Getting to Mexico City – ORD to MEX on AeroMexico
About my Flight from Chicago O'Hare to Mexico City on AeroMexico
My flight from Chicago O’Hare to Mexico City on AeroMexico was part of my journey from Chicago to Buenos Aires. I struggled to find a good review of the Chicago to Mexico City leg, so I decided to write my own.
The flight operates a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 3 classes of service. AeroMexico’s Premier Class is the first 4 rows, followed by 3 rows of AM Plus, and then 21 rows of Main Cabin Economy. Although I was originally in the exit row, I upgraded to AM Plus at a cost of $28. I decided to do this because the middle seat was taken in the exit row, but AM Plus row 8 had an open middle and aisle. I hoped that no one would take the middle seat, allowing me some extra room.
Unfortunately, the flight ended up being fully booked, which meant someone was in the middle seat. The 4 extra inches that AM Plus provided was not as much extra legroom as the exit row would have allowed.

AeroMexico Check-In Procedures - Chicago O'Hare International Airport
Check-in at Chicago O’hare International Airport was fairly routine. My flight was out of the International Terminal (Terminal 5), and when I arrived at the airport at 9:30 pm the check-in area was pretty deserted. At this time of night, there were only a few flights that had not yet departed.
AeroMexico had a row of kiosks that were not working. The broken kiosks meant that everyone had to get into the mainline to check-in. Thankfully, multiple agents were working the check-in desk, and the check-in process was fairly quick. I was given my boarding pass and instructed that I would not need to reclaim my bag in Mexico City.
The next step was security. Chicago O’Hare Airport does not have a separate section for TSA Pre-Check members. As a result, the only TSA Pre perk that I received was not having to take off my shoes. The security line was light, and I was at the gate within 45 minutes of arriving.
AeroMexico Boarding Procedures - Chicago O'Hare to Mexico City
Terminal 5 at Chicago O’Hare Airport is way behind most other major international airports in the US. There are only a few shops and restaurants and most of them were closed. AeroMexico boards their flight about 40 minutes prior to the departure time and requires passengers to be in the gate area 60 minutes before their flight is set to depart.
My flight was set to depart at 12:20 am but was delayed until 1:00 am due to a late arriving aircraft. The boarding process consists of lining up at number queues for boarding zones 1 through 5. Despite upgrading to AM Plus, I boarded with zone 5. Thankfully, there was room in the overhead bin for my backpack. One perk to boarding last was that within 10 minutes of taking my seat the flight pushed back from the gate.
Seat 8D - AeroMexico 737-800 - Chicago O'Hare to Mexico City
I sat in seat 8D for my flight from Chicago to Mexico City. Seat 8D is an AM Plus seat, which meant I had 4 extra inches of legroom. The extra legroom increased the seat pitch from 32 inches to 36 inches. As stated earlier, I gave up my exit row seat in hopes that there would be no one sitting next to me. Had I known the flight was full, I definitely would have kept the exit row.
Despite having a person next to me, the seat was fairly comfortable. The headrest adjusted with bendable flaps to support my neck, and the in-seat entertainment screen kept me updated on my flight’s progress.
AeroMexico Meals - Chicago O'Hare to Mexico City
Shortly after takeoff, the inflight meal was served. The meal consisted of a ham and cheese sandwich, vanilla pudding, and a Kit Kat. While the meal wasn’t anything special, it was nice to be able to have something to eat. With a flight time of fewer than 4 hours, it is rare to receive a meal for free on any flight these days.
AeroMexico Entertainment - Chicago O'Hare to Mexico City
I slept the entire flight, which meant I did not use the inflight entertainment. AeroMexico’s inflight entertainment featured movies in both English and Spanish. In addition to the new releases, there was a special section for Christmas Movies. Below are a few pictures of the menu.
Buying WiFi on AeroMexico - Chicago O'Hare to Mexico City
AeroMexico has free messaging on most of its 737 and 787 flights. The free messaging is supported on iMessage, Facebook Chat, and WhatsApp. I used the free messaging for a short time to message my little brother. He was up late assembling my niece’s Christmas present which was a Grocery Store.
Full WiFi is available for purchase with a variety of plans. A screenshot of the costs is to the right.
My Conclusions About My Flight on AeroMexico
AeroMexico provided good service on this redeye flight from Chicago to Mexico City. I would rank AeroMexico slightly above the American Air Carriers due to the free meal and free messaging. I hope to one day take this flight again to visit Mexico City.
After arriving in Mexico City, I went through immigration and security. My connection provided 3 hours to kill, so I went to the American Express Lounge and wrote this review.
