Watching the Sunset from Dauphin Island
Why I Chose Dauphin Island to Watch the Sunset
During my trip to the Gulf Coast, I decided to venture from Biloxi, Mississippi, to Mobile, Alabama, to visit Alligator Alley. On the way back to Biloxi, I was searching for places to see the sunset. I came across an article that claimed Dauphin Island, Alabama, was one of the best places in the United States to watch the sun go down.
I arrived about 90-minutes before sunset and decided to try Dauphin Beach, which was one of the public beaches. I parked adjacent to the Pirate’s Bar and Grill and then walked down some steps to access the beach. When I arrived at the beach, I was unimpressed at first as the beach access was an interior part of the Gulf of Mexico named Pelican’s Cove. Pelican’s Cove is blocked from the main part of the Gulf of Mexico by a cape that acts as a break for the large waves.
With quite a bit of time before sundown, I decided to walk out to the cape. Once I was on the cape, I was able to access the actual Gulf of Mexico. After a brief walk up and down the beach, I found the perfect spot to watch the sunset. The weather was somewhat hazy, and I thought it made the sunset even more spectacular.

Dauphin Island Sunset Photos
Dauphin Island did not disappoint, and I thought the spot I chose was a spectacular place to watch the sunset. I will share a few quick tips if you are going to watch the sunset at Dauphin Island. First, make sure you bring a tripod as you will want to take photos with longer exposures. Second, be sure to walk out onto the cape to escape the shoreline of Pelican’s Cove. Third, be sure to arrive early as it is about a thirty-minute walk from the parking lot to the best locations. Finally, you will be walking back in the dark. I highly recommend bringing a flashlight to help with your return.
