Coffee on Mackinac Island

There are two coffee houses on Mackinac Island, Starbucks and Lucky Bean Coffee House. I highly suggest visiting the local Lucky Bean Coffee House and supporting a local Mackinac Island Business.

Mackinac Island Fudge

Upon arriving at Mackinac Island the first time, guests will notice two distinct smells. The first is slightly unpleasant, as the horses use the streets of Mackinac as their toilet. The second is the delicious smell of fudge. Fudge has been a staple on Mackinac Island since Murdick’s Fudge opened in 1887. Today, there are many different shops selling fudge, English Toffee, premium chocolates and candy, and ice cream.

The four historical fudge shops on the Island are Joann’s, May’s, Murdick’s, and Ryba’s. The Grand Hotel and Murray Hotel also sell fudge. Recently, Detroit-based Sanders Chocolate and Ice Cream Shop opened a location on Mackinac Island.

During the day, visitors can observe the fudge being made right in front of them. All of the fudge shops offer free samples, and if you are there at the right time, you can get a sample of newly-made fudge right off the slab.

It is impossible to recommend a specific fudge shop because everyone claims that their fudge is “the best.” Fudge comes in many flavors, and some of the stores even have sugar-free fudge and other candies.

When you visit Mackinac Island, be sure to purchase the Island’s most famous souvenir, delicious Mackinac Island Fudge.
