Amsterdam's Royal Palace

About the Royal Palace of Amsterdam

The Royal Palace of Amsterdam is home to King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.  King Willem-Alexander does not actually hold any power and acts as a figurehead similar to Queen Elizabeth II.  The palace is a beautiful building that is located on the west end of Dam Square.  Dam Square also includes the country’s National Monument which commemorates the soldiers who died in World War II and other armed conflicts.

A State Visit by the President of Argentina

During my second day in Amsterdam, I walked past the Royal Palace and noticed a bunch of security.  I found a police officer who spoke English and was told that Mauricio Macri, the President of Argentina was on a state visit and would be departing shortly via motorcade.  I decided to wait to see what all I’d be able to see.  A few minutes later President Macri and King Willem-Alexander walked out of the palace and went to lay a wreath at the site of the National Monument.

Returning to the Palace to Wait for the Motorcade

A few minutes later President Macri’s motorcade arrived, and he departed for the airport.  It was a unique experience to see the Royal Palace hosting an official state visit.  I had no idea that this was occurring during my stay and happened to walk by the palace at just the right time.
