City Center Hotel – Excellent Accommodations in Reykjavik
City Center Hotel Reykjavik - Rates and Information
For my accommodations in Iceland, I chose the City Center Hotel. One thing everyone should know about Iceland is it is costly. I typically try to find hotels under $100 a night. If I had chosen a hotel of that price in Iceland, I would have been looking for a hostel or a hotel with a shared bathroom.
Location was important to me because I was only going to be in Iceland for a short time. I wanted quick access to Downtown Reykjavik and a nearby bus stop to meet my tour groups. After many days of searching for hotels and booking, canceling and rebooking accommodations, I found a hotel that suited my needs.
The City Center Hotel was in the main tourist area of Reykjavik less than 1 KM from the Harpa Concert Hall and was even closer to Laugavegur Street. With my booking.com .Genius discount, I was able to secure two nights for $551. Since I arranged my departing flight to leave after midnight, I would not need a hotel for the third night. $551 seemed awfully expensive, but it was the most reasonable price I had seen in months for a hotel without a shared bathroom.

City Center Hotel Reykjavik - The Room
Check-in at the City Center Hotel was effortless, and I was in my room within five minutes of arriving. I was pleased to hear that the hotel would be happy to store my luggage after check-out as my flight was not until after midnight. My room included an oversized twin bed, a small refrigerator, a television, and a bathroom complete with a rainfall-style shower. Although the room was small, the accommodations were perfect for me. I just needed a centrally located place where I could sleep with my own bathroom. One other nice feature of my hotel room was that the windows opened and closed. I was on the top floor, and even though the temperature was never higher than 55ºF, it became quite warm in my room. A few minutes of opening the window quickly made the temperature more comfortable.
One thing all travelers must know about Iceland regardless of hotel choice is that the hot water will have a strong smell of sulfur. According to our Golden Circle Tour Guide hot water in Iceland is provided for free from underground hot springs. The water comes out of the ground and is sent through huge pipes to Iceland’s cities.
The sulfur smell was bothersome as it was extremely strong. I also had a hard time getting the water at a comfortable temperature. I know this is the experience visitors have at other hotels too as it was the one major complaint that I heard on both of my tours.
One tourist who was staying at a luxury hotel thought that their hot water might be filtered before it ended up in their shower. He was the only one who did not seem to experience the sulfur smelling water.
