Preparing for the Sólheimajökull Glacier Climb
Before setting off, our group gathered at the glacier’s base camp, where we met our guide. The staff provided all the necessary equipment: climbing harnesses, crampons, helmets, and ice picks. If you don’t have proper footwear, you can easily rent waterproof boots on-site, which I highly recommend. Arctic Adventures also suggests dressing in layers, as temperatures on the glacier can vary.
One surprise? Glacier climbing was warmer than I expected! Our guide, dressed in just a t-shirt and pants, reassured us that the hike would keep us comfortable. After a quick safety briefing, we began our ascent, starting with a walk through the muddy areas left by recent glacier melt.
The Thrill of Glacier Climbing
Walking on the Sólheimajökull Glacier itself felt surprisingly easy, thanks to the crampons providing traction on the ice. Our guide mentioned that the glacier’s appearance changes weekly due to melting, giving every climb a unique path. Using a massive ice ax, he cut through the ice, creating a new route for our group.
What makes Sólheimajökull especially fascinating is its proximity to the Katla Volcano, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes. Layers of volcanic ash are embedded in the glacier, creating striking black-and-white patterns. Along the way, we filled our water bottles directly from the glacier, with occasional flakes of ash adding an extra touch of authenticity.
The climb lasted about three hours and was tailored for beginners, so it wasn’t overly strenuous. When we reached a plateau, we paused to enjoy the surreal beauty of the glacier before heading back. Advanced climbers can continue higher, but for me, this introduction to glacier hiking in Iceland was just right.
