A Rare Ice Cave Adventure
The Katla Ice Cave, one of Iceland’s rare year-round ice caves, offers an unforgettable adventure. My visit, during winter, revealed a magical landscape of snow and ice. The Katla Ice Cave is part of the Kötlujökull Glacier, which itself is a smaller glacier within the massive Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, Iceland’s fourth-largest glacier. Though the cave is relatively small, the surrounding area, with its snow-covered vistas and dramatic terrain, is equally breathtaking.

The Journey to the Katla Ice Cave
The journey to the Katla Ice Cave is an adventure in itself. Tours typically start in Reykjavik or the nearby town of Vik Iceland, located on Iceland’s South Coast. From Vik, we switched to a super jeep, equipped to handle the rugged off-road in Iceland conditions. Our guide demonstrated how they lower the tire pressure for the rough terrain, which made the hour-long, bumpy drive across volcanic landscapes unforgettable. If you’re prone to motion sickness like me, I recommend taking precautions before the drive.
Getting Geared Up for the Ice Cave
Reaching the Katla Ice Cave, we geared up with crampons and helmets, essential for navigating the icy terrain. The crampons provided traction on the slippery ice, while the helmet—required by law—protected me from bumps, including one on the door of the super jeep! After a short walk from the parking area, we entered the cave, which, while small, was mesmerizing. Lights inside the cave highlighted the shimmering ice, making it easier to capture great photos.

While inside the cave, our guide snapped photos for each of us before allowing time to explore. Admittedly, most of the “exploration” involved staying out of each other’s shots! The best photo I captured was from the entrance, looking out at the snow-covered landscape framed by the cave’s icy walls.

If you plan to visit the Katla Ice Cave, here are a few tips:
- Always go with a guided tour—the off-road terrain requires expertise and specialized vehicles.
- Pack crampons and a helmet, as they’re essential for safety.
- Take your time capturing photos; lighting inside the cave makes photography easier.
- Don’t miss a shot from the entrance, showcasing the dramatic contrast of the icy cave against the winter landscape.
- Combine this tour with nearby South Coast attractions, such as Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach or South Coast waterfalls, to make the most of your trip.
Is the Katla Ice Cave Worth the Journey?
Visiting the Katla Ice Cave in winter is an incredible experience, but it’s important to note that it requires significant travel time. From Reykjavik, the journey to the cave takes at least three hours each way. The cave itself is much smaller than it appears in photos, but its charm lies in the experience of getting there and the stunning surrounding scenery. For me, the combination of the off-road journey, the beauty of the South Coast, and the icy wonder of the cave made it a highlight of my trip to Iceland.
