A Memorable Visit in 2016
In March 2016, I had the opportunity to visit Notre Dame Cathedral during one of my first international trips. Back then, I didn’t own a camera, so the photos I captured were taken with my iPhone 5. Despite the simplicity of my equipment, I was still able to capture some of the awe-inspiring beauty of Notre Dame.
What stood out most during my visit was the interior’s striking atmosphere. The cathedral felt dark, with its towering walls and shadowy corners illuminated by rays of light streaming through the vibrant stained glass windows. I marveled at the Romanesque-inspired facade, intricate carvings, and detailed sculptures that adorned this sacred space.
The Fire at Notre Dame and a New Beginning
On April 15, 2019, a catastrophic fire engulfed Notre Dame, causing extensive damage to its roof and iconic spire. This tragedy left the world in shock and marked the beginning of a painstaking restoration process.
Over five years later, on December 7, 2024, Notre Dame reopened its doors to the public. The restoration involved artisans and craftsmen from around the globe, who worked tirelessly to restore its original beauty while modernizing aspects of the interior.

I was fortunate to visit Notre Dame once again on December 31, 2024, just a few weeks after the grand reopening.
Getting Inside Notre Dame Without a Reservation
Getting inside required some patience. Notre Dame had implemented a reservation system to control crowds, but despite multiple attempts, I couldn’t secure a ticket in advance. Thankfully, a line labeled “free entry, no reservations” made entry possible after just over an hour of waiting.
A Quiet Walk During the Service
Once inside, I was asked to remove my hat and informed that photos and videos were allowed, provided they didn’t include people participating in the service. While the mass was still in progress, I took a quiet walk around the ambulatory, admiring the stunning architecture and serene atmosphere.
Noticing Changes After the Fire
After the service concluded, I had the chance to explore the rest of the cathedral. Two changes stood out immediately. First, the interior is now much brighter than before the fire, thanks to a refreshed lighting design. Second, the space felt new, with a clean and revitalized scent that symbolized a fresh start for this centuries-old monument.
A Glimpse into Notre Dame’s History
Construction of Notre Dame began in 1163 and spanned nearly two centuries, finally reaching completion in 1345. Designed in the Gothic style, the cathedral features flying buttresses, ornate sculptures, and its world-famous rose windows, which depict biblical scenes in dazzling color.
