Visiting El Morro Fort – San Juan, Puerto Rico
About the El Morro Fort
One of the highlights of my visit to Puerto Rico was the El Morro Fort. El Morro was built in 1539 during the Spanish rule of Puerto Rico. The US military later occupied it from 1898 until 1961.
After taking an Uber from my hotel to Old San Juan, I was easily able to walk to El Morro. The entry fee was $5, and that gained me entrance to both El Morro and the other Puerto Rican fort of San Cristobal.
Be sure to spend some time walking around Old San Juan before or after visiting El Morro. The surrounding area is definitely worth seeing.

Visiting El Morro
El Morro has multiple levels, and they are each worth visiting. The top-level mainly provides excellent views of San Juan and the Caribbean Sea. It isn’t until I went down into the lower levels that I honestly felt the history of El Morro. One of the highlights was walking down through a tunnel and going into the prison. The prison of El Morro had a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea. Also on the lower level were modernizations including restrooms and a gift shop.
The area around El Morro features beautiful green grass that receives plenty of rain from the tropical climate of Puerto Rico. Upon leaving Puerto Rico, I walked through Old San Juan towards the San Cristobal Fort. El Morro was much more spectacular than San Cristobal. If you only have time for one fort, make sure it is El Morro.
